Its not an official race as far as I am aware. Its more of a group of people doing a long training run together.
I think that there was supposed to be another West of Ireland marathon on this year though but I haven't seen anything about that online yet.

I'm not sure if this is a private event or if it's open for entries, to be honest.

Sixmilebridge is a small village in Co Clare, not far from Limerick. It's a marathon (26 loops of a one mile circuit ) and there is a very small field of experienced runners taking part. I have some other details but I'm not sure if I am allowed to put them into the public domain - I'll be talking to the organiser this week so I'll let them know this thread is here (assuming they don't see it themselves first). If they are ok with it I'll put up more info or pass you on thier contact details.

[edit] AFAIK it is a race because there are a few people doing it who will be using it towards 100 marathon club entry. That said they have different standards for what qualifies as a race so as I said I don't know if it counts as official or not

+ 2 travelling up from the deep South :)

The numbers / entry is restricted as the roads are not closed and they can only track so many over a multiple loop course.

For those of you who didn't see it, there was a piece on the upcoming Marathon on what I think was a local newspaper.

You can find the article as a JPG on the following website...

Will I be safe wearing my Tipperary jersey running around Clare?
Or do I need a change of shirts for this one? Maybe Oisin could wear a Dub jersey just to take the heat off.
Of course I expect RunningCoach to have the Rebel colours on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 240 ✭✭runningcoach

Eddie I will need to contact the village elders for permission for you to wear your Tipp jersey !!! Frank should be OK with the DUB jersey as they probaly will not recognise it ....... sure they would have only seen it a couple of times in the last few years on TV:D

But one thing is for certain you do not want to be wearing the Donkey tee shirt in Caseys Pub afterwards. Whats the Donkey tee shirt for ? it will be awarded to the unlucky particapant that slows up the most on the 2nd half of race in comparision to their first half spilt. This is one marathon you do not want to go out too hard in too early in :D

I have about 10 bottles (possibly more, possibly less) of lucozade sport in my shed that I'm never going to drink. If anyone heading down to this from Dublin would like to pick them up and bring them for all these super athletes to sip at the end of each lap, you are all welcome to them. They're nearly out of date I think so they'll only go in the bin.

Whats the course like? Lots of hills in and out of the crossroads in the centre of the village. Couldn't imagine going up some of those hills 26 times.

Well I'll bring it along anyway. I don't think Frank even knows what the Jacks jersey is like these days.
    Pity about the donkey tshirt.
I had planned on getting my 13 miles at 8:30 scheduled run out of the way early and then just completing the marathon but it looks like I will be trying to reverse the order now.
And I am off to Dolans in Limerick on the Saturday night.

Yeah its only for the tough ones mate. Sounds like you would be mentally drained before you even turned up.:D

BTW any junctions will be marshaled.;)

What sort of hills are we talking about here tom?

One hill on each lap Frank , 400 mtrs in length average gradient of 4% followed by 1200 mtrs of flat or downhill sections.

We are looking good with the Gels. Ger Kirwan sent down 4 boxes of High Five gels during the week and we received crates of powerade today so the field should be well hydrated.

I can pick those up on Friday evening at the hospital? Or early Saturday morning. I am getting the midday train to Limerick so could pick them up at 10 or 11 or whenever if you want.

RQ - No Worries. We now have more than enough of powerade and Gels for the race.

    Keep them for 2011 :)

I could be mistaken, but I think the only thing that was sub 3 was the temperature! Well done to everyone.

Id like to see someone go sub 3 on that course:D
Super tough course. The same hill 26 times. Like a kick in the guts near the end.
On a par with portumna with organisation. Everthing went flawlessly.

Yep this was a very well organised race. I should know because I helped set up a few bollards and the marquee!
Frank came second in a good race.
I managed 3:49:49 according to the Garmin and I thought this was quite good as everybody said that 1/4 mile of a hill on a 26 lap race meant that there was 6 miles of straight uphill on the entire race.
I will say that that hill did get just that little bit harder each time I went around. Thanks to Paul from Tyrone for running with me for 21`miles.
It was only his second marathon after DCM where he ran 3:51.
I had to keep reassuring him that just because we were last for the first few miles and the first to be lapped after 5 miles did not mean that we were not going to finish last. We were running just under 9 min miles and I couldn't believe that everybody was going to run faster than sub 4 on that course.
Luckily enough I was proved correct as we gradually started to pass other runners. We even passed people who had lapped us in the first half and then lapped a few of them later on. People were walking the hill a lot in the second half.
I upped the pace for the last 6 miles and managed to do sub 8:30s for them all and Paul dropped away at mile 21. Runningcoach was suffering from a bad cold and did well to finish. I doubt that I will be lapping him twice if we run that race again but I didn't feel sorry to do it today.
Its a Tipp Cork thing and I wouldn't expect him to feel sorry if he had done the same to me.
In conclusion, great race and I hope to be returning there next year; it was also one of the best medals I have received.

Presumably there were 6 miles of downhill too. :)

Acually there was probably about 12 miles of downhill as there wasn't much flat in the mile. I will have to check out the laps on the Garmin to see what it as like exactly.
Mind you I was told that just because "those IMRA people think that a point to point lap equals a flat mile" only means that they are madder than us.

The downhills were hurting my legs more than the uphills:D
Really enjoyed the course. Make no mistake it was hard, but everybody has to do the same course so it was fair:D
There was about a million phots taken, im sure they will surface somewhere.

Just massive thanks to the Boards people who travelled to take part and Gary ,Kevin Andrew & Steff who helped out on the Day.

Just a couple of footnotes on the event.

Photos will be available in a day or so when Patrick views all one thousand pictures he took on the Day :p The Clare people newspaper also took pictures so we will also have them.

The Donkey T-shirt award was withdrawn near the end of the marathon when it was very apparent I was going to be getting it :D

One of our marshals Lisa from Cannada got much attention from many of our male competitors. she was only meant to be marshalling for 1 hour and she stayed the whole time ..... not sure if she was justed so bowled over by the event or that some of the lads would not let her leave.

Yes the hill sparked debate amongest the runners and I got my ear burned on each lap !! In fact only one competitor did not complain ........ Gerry Forde not for the first time stole the show with his performance.179th marathon yesterday. He was the talk of the village last night.

Talking to the elites beforehand I know that a certain Dublin man was out to beat a certain corkman. Which he did in fairness but that certain corkman happen to bring a mate to take the title back to Cork. My fellow corkmen I am extremely proud of the amount of bluffing yee got up upto beforehand to claim the win:D

Pat O'Keefe was unbelievable in his miltary style planning for the event. Now that we know we can do the marathon in the Bridge we have agreed we will also have an Ultra next year .... but we just have to find 3 other lunatics to do it with us !PM me if you are up for it. Its looking like 53 laps.

Yep that was I - Coaching those kids up the hill was brilliant, at first I thought they`d be throwing ****/abuse at us, but they were so good and a cheerful distraction each lap! :p

Fair play to Gerry Forde for doing those hills 26 times!

I remember passing him in Dublin, everyone passes on the well done to him as they pass and he just spends his whole race passing on the same comment. His voicebox must be in bits by the time he gets to the finish line.

I have put the route up on the MapMyRun website for anyone that is interested.

Looking at that map, it would seem as if the hill was about 560 metres long.........X 26 times = 14.5 kms or 9 miles of uphill.
