    Michael M,

Congrats on making the decision to change your lifestyle. Good luck with it and I hope it works out.

A lot of what you have to do will rely on the results of your assessment. Not smoking is a good start. But if you are really overweight, any training would need to concentrate on getting your weight down. Then again, you could have good aerobic ability.

I will step out on a limb and say you will have a lot of work to do but need to know a lot more about your results and general situation.

But remember why you are doing this, set out your goals, objectives and reasons, and then write them down. These will keep you going.

Who's performing the assessment? A doctor, personal trainer or someone down the gym?

8 weeks to run 8k is feasible subject to your starting point if running is what you really want to do. Post up assessment results and some more info.
