Attended my first orienteering event today. Details on my training log here

Would strongly recommend it. Particularly good for families. The kids loved it.

Next event I believe is Sunday 7th Nov at 3 Rock.

+1 Today was a real blast, I'd love to try some orienteering proper over the winter. Run, climb, tumble, fall, spot the flag you've been looking for, beats the pants off road running any day of the week (bitter? me?;)).

Another thing of note, the scale of the operation, most of yesterday the organizers spent setting up the various controls for the five or six different courses. Today they'll be out there for 12-14 hours, and this on top of the hours spent mapping and routing a mountain. Total entry, €8 adult, €4 juniors, for a great day out, run as professionally as you could want for. Shows the power of having dedicated volunteers, fair play to them.

Delighted to hear ye enjoyed Orienteering!

It is an amazing sport. I love running but(dont kill me for saying this:)) sometimes I think it like an exact science and a bit boring. I mean ya could always nearly predict your road race time and be within a minute cross country would be slightly different but not much.

With Orienteering anything can happen. The winning time for a 5k course could be 25 minutes or an hour. Its all depends on the course and split second decisions everyone makes on the course. Little things like deciding to go cross country over taking the easy route on a track can win an event for you or be absolutely disastrous and cost ya 15 minutes.

Its very varied aswell. Ive ran in forests, mountains and sand dunes.

Hopefully ye are hooked now:D Take a look at http://orienteering.ie. It is very big in Dublin and surrounding areas and Cork. Not so big in Connacht but the Connacht champs are on soon in Portumna with details here http://westerneaglesgalwayorienteers.blogspirit.com/. Also keep an eye out for my club Sligo Orienteering Club

Results are up. Little Miss StroponPop came first in her category today! Slogger Junior just pipped Master MoponPop by a soggy wellie for second and third places. Well done all:)

For added fun, check out night orienteering at the Dublin by Night events! I've never been more lost in my life than at a night-o event in a forest in Cork a few years ago :)
