Citroen C5 1.6 HDI

    Hi all,

    I’m looking for some advice on the current model Citroen c5 1.6 HDI, as I’m thinking about buying a 2008 one with 44,000 miles on the clock. Do they have any reliability issues or is there anything in particular that I should look out for? What are they like fuel wise, mpg? I was a bit surprised to see that the 1.6 diesel costs 302 euros to tax as opposed to the 156 euro that it costs to tax the same engine in a Peugeot 407, Volvo s40.

    I’m looking at trading a 2006 Peugeot 407 2.0 HDI with 88,000 miles for the C5 from a main Citroen dealer and they are looking for 8,000 euro along with my own. Seems a bit on the expensive side to me, or am I wrong? Thanks.

    I don't know where you getting the tax difference between the C5 and 407 from. If you check the Citroen and Peugeot websites you'll that both cars are spec'ed equally at 140g/km which puts both cars on the upper limit but still inside Band B €156 pa. The budget is likely to change the cost but both cars will remain the same.

    I test drove a C5 and it was 302 tax, not because of emissions but the spec that some of the cars came in with, bigger wheels and slightly heavier etc All the new ones are 156

    All I know is that I test drove a 407 1.6 HDI and the tax on it was 156 and I also test drove a C5 1.6 HDI and the tax was 302.

    9th in Family car sector: Citroen C5

    Vehicle owner satisfaction score 78.8%
    Overall 59th=
    If only the Citroen C5's reliability score matched the high ratings given to its styling, seats and driving performance, it would appear much higher up the table. Problems were reported with the car's doors and tailgate, noisy brakes and steering.

    Owners gave running costs and servicing average marks. Dealers were rated better for their courtesy and responsiveness than for the quality of their work.

    C5 ranked just 1 below the Passat and 4 above the Pug 407 in that class.
    Even in the overall stakes the Passat got 80% while the C5 got 78.8%, not much difference imo, at least not enough to make me think badly against the C5.

    When the current C5 was launched, the 1.6HDi was in tax band C. The 2009 models were then tax band B. You'll easily be able to tell the difference. 2008 or band C models have 17" alloys whereas the 2009 band B versions have 16" alloys. 2009s also have integrated bluetooth.

    From that same JD... survey:

    Toyota Prius

    There were few complaints about reliability, but the driving experience wasn't so popular, with a few grumbles about noisy brakes and excessive or uneven tyre wear. Owners didn't like their cars' exterior styling

    Prius rating: 2nd

    It would seem to me that owners of the likes of the prius, while not actually liking their car, still rate it highly?

    ed: I would take the JDpower ratings with a grain of salt.

    That same survey also rated the 3 series as inferior to the lexus IS, merc C class, audi a5 and jag X type...

    It's like someone burning smokeless fuel when they live out in the country and don't have to: it's dearer, it doesn't give as nice a fire, but I feel all smug and virtuous.

    €8000 to trade up two years, it's expensive but it's not out of the ordinary.

    Why not go for a 2.0 HDI, OP?

    Won't the 1.6 be rather sluggish, it doesn't exactly have a lot of power with only 110 bhp?

    Then you open up a whole car of worms. If you are going for the 2.0 liter than I'd be hunting down an Exclusive, loads more toys, hydractive suspension, leather, feels very special. Not many here but surprisingly affordable in the UK.
