Rant: Fake spectacles.

    Rant:
Feckin' false spectacles. OK, so they give off the geekchic glamour for now. The downside is that non-spectacle wearers are now driving frame fashions and the obnoxious big round frame is becoming the norm. It is just so wrong to bring that abomination back from the dead.
Secondly, but most importantly, this current trend in wearing false glasses is that in a year or so it is going to make us real glasses wearers look so pathetic. The fashion will have passed and yet we will be still left wearing glasses - looking like idiots who are flogging a dead horse prolonging a dead fashion. It will be like we are still wearing Day PJ's and Crocs and thinking we are still 'with it'.

    /Shakes fist at false glasses.
    Grrrrrr

Well said OldGoat! I'm a glasses wear of just over 20 years now, and am dreading having to find my next pair, as I know I will be bombarded with 'big' glasses which I fought so much to avoid the past decade!

I'm so sick of seeing these trendy glasses frames popping up everywhere :(

    YES! thank you.

It's just so annoying- all these little hipsters that you just want to smack on the nose with a rolled up paper and say "NO! Bad hispter. BAD!"

It's also ruining the inherant sexiness of glasses. (I say as both a glasses wearer and admirer of others in sexy glasses ). Because those Deirdre Barlow glasses ARE NOT SEXY.

Small little rimless glasses, now... they're a different story. The actually DO make you look smart as opposed to someone trying too hard.

I think it's a horrendous trend to carry along :o The oversized, 'geeky' spectacles look ridiculous...

I also hate these glasses on people. I don't wear glasses myself but I do enjoy glasses on the male species when they're not knob-end fake big framed stupid things. Wear glasses if you need them yes please and they are so lovely but not if you're just trying to look cool. It doesn't work - you look like an idiot.

    I hate this trend!!!
It's so annoying. I have to wear my glasses or contact lenses full time or I can't see a thing; really grinds my gears seeing people wearing the novelty glasses as a fashion statement.

I have a prescription pair of RayBan Wayfarer tortoise shell glasses and i've actually stopped wearing them as much recently because of that wanker fake glasses trend

I must be the only one who hasn't encountered this so called trend?

I keep seeing people wearing these glasses...
    I really don't get it.
They don't make you look prettier or better looking.
My Boyfriend just thinks they look like idiots.

Oh well, I probably wear things that other people think look awful.

Whatever makes them happy eh! :)

This trend doesn't bother me that much (agree that these glasses make the wearers look like dolts though).

There's a huge distinction between the comically over-sized frames that hipsters wear and ordinary prescription glasses for everyday wear. I doubt anyone could confuse the two and as such, I don't think "real" glasses-wearers would be confused for people who wear them as an accessory.

I might be biased though, my prescription is so strong that I can't wear rimless or "sleek" glasses, so chunkier frames coming into fashion is in my favour :D

I like larger framed glasses, always did. I love the big ass aviators from the seventies and the likes especially. The trend of wearing fake ones is beyond silly though.

I always thought large frames were more practical for seeing around. I'd say it's annoying when the frame is in your field of vision.

I think it's funny that the very people who are wearing this nerd-chic are the people who would have teased you about being a nerd back in school.

I am a glasses wearer and i have to say i dont have a problem with the trend. The huge ones are ridiculous but i quite like bigger frames

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,305 ✭✭✭Chuchoter

I hate this trend with a passion. It makes you look like a retard anyway.
The most annoying part of it though, is as a real glasses wearer with a very small face and a prescription that requires small frames (or else the rays of light don't align properly) it is near on impossible to get glasses that fit, because the big chunky frame trend has taken over real glasses frames.

I remember, as a glasses-wearing kid, my disgust that Ronan Keating won the Heat magazine (or some God-awful publication) Glasses Wearer of the Year Award. He had perfect eyesight. I'm just waiting on the oversized hearing aids or glowing orange fake pacemakers to make an appearance.
I know it's a fashion thing, but it feels like they're mocking us with their 20/20 vision and glasses without the glass!!!

I love big frames, they're easier to see out of and they suit my face better than small frames. I hate this trend though because now everyone thinks my glasses are fake! It's really annoying, I get people trying to steal my glasses on nights out because they assume they're just cheap plastic lensed things.

That is SO annoying, in general- "Can I try on your glasses, I look SOOOOO funny with glasses on they look so stupid- look, how do I look????"

Emmm, I can't see because YOU'RE WEARING MY GLASSES!!!!! Right now you are a blur.

Hip hip to this thread. I already feel like enough of an asshole on account of my crappy eyes, I don't need a bunch of jerks making a fashion statement out of my disability! Next up: Crutches Chic. Flip off! :p

Haha my mate has wayfarers with proper lenses, has worn them for years, and people are always coming up and nabbing them off his poor face! They never think they're real until he shouts "HEY I need them to SEE!!"

Same here. However it is funny to watch them go crosseyed in pain as their eyes try to adjust to my monstrous perscription.

Good topic, I was prescribed to wear glasses this year when using a computer and probably driving (whenever I get around to taking the theory test!)

I got the nerdy type looking ray ban wayfarers glasses because I did in fact like them and now people think i wear them as a fashion trend when I use them in college or the library. I just stop wearing them completely soon after.

This is me all over..with a -6.5 and -7 perscription, I'm sugared without my specs!

Plus, I hate people who physically try to take your glasses from your face, (usually when drunk) as if they are free for all property!

Same prescription as me! Oh yeah!

Grrrrr I hates those fake-glasses-wearing-freaks!!! And I find the same thing now....people won't take their mucky paws off my REAL glasses!! And it makes me blind and scared!

Wow I've been wearing glasses over 25 years and I've never had someone try and take them from my face, thankfully. I'm surprised that it's happened to so many of you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,590 ✭✭✭Pigwidgeon

You've never had someone take your glasses? Wow, you're lucky. They always insist on grabbing them by lens and making them filthy which makes it even more annoying!

I think this trend just looks ridiculous, especially to the few people I've seen you have just gotten the 3D cinema glasses and popped out the lens, to just just have the frames. So stupid.

I certainly have, just got glasses this summer that cost me the best part of a designer handbag so I'm thinking of waiting until I'm 25 to get them zapped!

THIS wrecks my head. I guess in a way it's the same feeling you hear women experience when a stranger thinks it is okay to touch their pregnant belly...RAGE.
Haha, yes!! Followed by "OMG you're SOOOOOOO blind!"

and THIS. I'd hardly be wearing glasses 24/7 if I didn't have bad eyesight..oh yeah, wait a sec, everyone's wearing nerdy glasses no...

OH.MY.GOD. When they take your glasses by the f'n lens!! And their big filthy fingerprint is on the lens you have to see through! I wouldn't just stick my finger in your eye?!

The grabbing of my glasses pisses me off big time, they usually end up getting streched too cause I have a really narrow face so throws the whole frame out. Grrr

I actually work in an opticians and it amazes me the amount of people and the amount they spend just to have designer glasses with no correction in them. They walk in and just want any designer pair just to have the label on them, some even ask if they can keep the dummy lenses that say "Dior" or what not on them. Madness. Especially when you are in my position and see families that come in and can't afford glasses for their children, breaks your heart.

I have to say I love the bigger frames on some people, we have had a lot of people get them and they really suit them, it does however greatly amuse me when I see people go around with the 3D glasses from the cinema with the lense popped out. Be glad you are able to see without any help cause believe me in 20/30 years you won't be as happy to be getting glasses.

    Yours,
    Specy Four Eyes 8)

That is exactly what I'm like when I wear my Wayfayers on a night out, some girls are polite and ask me if they can try them, while some will just grab them off my face .

I wonder how long this trend will last?

Grab hand by tops of fingers and twist violently back towards wrist. Don't let go til they apologise.

Glasses are a necessity, not a luxury. If only D&G made crutches...
