Hi, I'm planning on travelling for 2 months (ish) around south america next year. the plan is to fly into Rio and then gradually make my way over to Santiago where i'll fly out to NZ. I know i def want to see iguazu falls, buenos aires and salt flats in bolivia but not sure what else and what is feasible in the 6-8 week timeframe. any suggestions on other places to see and/or best route?? I'm getting so confused at this point!

You could map out a route and see how long you want to spend in each place. Add it all up plus 24hr travelling between each destination. That will give you a rough idea of what you can see.

Below is a route I took

I'm currently in the middle of a 10 week South America trip. I started in Rio also and will also finish in Santiago before going to NZ so I can help you.

    My trip is:

    - Rio
    - Ilha Grande, beautiful island
    - Paraty, picturesque colonial town
    - Iguassu Falls
    - Colonia, another picturesque colonial town but different to Paraty. UNESCO World Heritage Site
    - Montevideo, 1 day is all thats needed here unless you like football, in which case the Centenario Stadium and museem are worth a visit as it is the birthplace of the World Cup
    - Buenos Aires
    - FLIGHT to El Calafate to see the Perito Moreno Glacier
    - Puerto Madryn to see Whales and Penguins (depends on time of year)
    - Bariloche, lots of great outdoor activities
    - Mendoza, rent a bike at Mr Hugo's and cycle from winery to winery.
    - Valparaiso, UNESCO World Heritage site, cultural capital of Chile
    - San Pedro de Atacama, a great spot to see some amazing landscapes like the Tetio Geysers, and a great spot to do sandboarding.
    - From there you can do a tour of Bolivia for 3 days. Afterwards you can finish in Uyuni and head on to La Paz or do what I'm doing and go back to San Pedro.
    - From San Pedro head up to Arequipa in Peru. Can do this from La Paz aswell.
    - After Arequipa head to Cusco, stay a few days to acclimatise to high altitude and then do Inca Trail (book well in advance, 6 months maybe)
    - After Inca Trail I fly from Cusco to Lima
    - After Lima I fly to Santiago

What airlines did you fly with?
