Peugeot 406 Electrical Problems.

    Hi Lads,

1996 406 1.9TD here is having serious problem starting. Turning over very slow from lack of power, same as dying battery. Installed new battery to no avail. Something is draining power but I don't know what. Disconnected radio and nothing has been installed recently.

Whatever is draining the power is doing so on the second key turn. Monitoring battery voltage it drops to about 11.8V on second key turn (brand new battery). Possibly normal due to glow plugs but Id expect it to jump back up after glow plug light goes off. Not the case here, it does go back up after a while to about 12.2 (say 30secs after glow plug light goes off). Just tried to start it again there and it wouldn't even turn over once with 12.2 on the battery after glow plugs had heated. Battery is probably drained now from multiple tries but clearly there is a short somewhere anyway. Also the car is pulling about 450mA on the first key turn, probably not significant as it may be powering a few bits and pieces.

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas what could be causing this? Id like to at least narrow it down before bringing it to a garage becasue Id imagine finding the cause would be quite time consuming and a serious pita. Could it be the starter motor?

Or what else is activated on the second key turn besides the glow plugs? What could be shorting here? Any known/common problems like this?

Just in case it's relevant this thing has a keypad immobiliser but it was disabled years ago due to some other problem, think that involved rewiring the fuel pump but can't be sure.

    Thanks for any help.

I don't see how 12.2 V from a non charging 12V battery after the heater plugs get their fix is a problem to be honest though.

Nah I don't think 12.2 V is a problem really, just pointing out my observations. So the battery is showing say 12.2 V right before I turn the key to crank but it cranks very slowly and won't start in the same manner it would if the battery was dead.

So I reckon something is shorting or perhaps the starter motor is damaged?

Thanks for the number, might make contact if I don't get it sorted.

    I think it is either:

that brushes (5 in the picture) are worn out inside the start motor or then you have a issue with grounding cable.
