Government bonds

Are government bonds a good investment. My friend has about €80k to invest. It needs to be fairly safe and he doesnt need to touch it for some years . Not sure how many but no fewer than five but probably much longer. Any ideas please.

Which government are you talking about? Ireland?

I'd be tempted to break it up over a few countries. Brazil, Singapore, Norway, Sweden, Turkey, Australia, Uruguay, Chile.

The FX returns may well outstrip the Bond returns.

Also maybe a slice in a FTSE tracker. Short term volatility must be ignored, if your friend cannot accept that then he should put the money in a savings account.
