Ok so im aware of things like Restriced Airspace that can be turned on and off etc and no-go areas over sensitive sites Worldwide but what Nations are you not fly over? What springs to mind easily would be North Korea, Afghanistan and Iraq, is there anywhere else that Civillian Commercial/Transport Traffic can not go thru and must avoid?

Im aware that Transport will go into Iraq/Afghanistan but thats usually Military Charter.

Commerical passenger flights do fly through Afghan airspace, at least my Quantas flight did a couple of years ago if memory is correct. I think they go over Iran too, I remember seeing clumps of large orange lights glowing 38,000ft below only to realise they were oil rigs still burning. I've no idea if there are any countries that have an entire no-go airspace.

Slow day in work so had a look in a well known British Airlines route manual

Interesting page entitled DIVERSIONS - POLITICAL CONSIDERATIONS

If travelling to Tel Aviv do not divert to Damascus or Beruit

COUNTRIES TO AVOID IN AN EMERGENCY

    Afganistan (sic)
    Burundi
    Iraq
    Liberia
    North Korea
    Somalia
    Yemen

    Airfields to avoid

    Peshawar

No explaination is given as to why but its fairly obvious - all warzones or areas of dispute

I remember a couple of years ago asking a BA 777 skipper about the likes of afganistan for fly overs,He told me at the time that the USAF controlled the skys and there call sign was Boss Man.
Many airlines fly over the Stans and Iraq but more than likely it wont show up on the in flight map of the acft so they dont scare the fook out of the pax:D,
Also flight crews get Notams that will keep them informed of any changes regarding freindly countries etc, I allways remember that the Afgan airline Ariana was banned from European airspace.
After that little stunt they pulled in STN a few years ago which caused me and my company major problems:mad:.

Flying Etihad from Dublin - Abu Dhabi and you get to look down on Baghdad from overhead most times (certainly the 4 times I've been on that route in the last 2 years). And if you cant see out the window it's in full colour on the in flight map! ;)
Overflights of these areas isn't usually a problem as its only at lower altitudes that the risks from missiles become higher.
Political disputes may moreso influence where an airline can overfly. Most significant example of this in the past that comes to mind was SAA during Apartheid. To fly to Europe they had to fly around Africa rather than over it which necessitated the construction of a huge runway at Upington where their 747s could refuel as they were performance limited from Joburg.

I flew LHR - DOH last year with QR and we came over Iraq in the dark. I was watching The Hurt Locker on the IFE as we went over!

There are the gas pipes burning off the excess which light up so bright, it's interesting to see.

Depends on the company in some cases- if they have an overflight permit or not....which may or not be granted depending on circumstances etc.

I recall flying KLM from AMS to Seoul, we had to fly all the way around China, and come at the Korean peninsula by flying over Vladivostok and then back along the Japanese coast. Eventually the Chinese let KLM use the airspace.

No issues with flying over Iraq or Afghanistan that I'm aware of, as long as the controllers aren't too busy dealing with military flights. Certainly there's no direct threat to the aircraft.

all the countries such as afgan iran saud iraq and cities like beruit all are flown over. also maps on passenger planes do sometimes show even over these areas. the no fly zones are to certain heights not completely restricted. therre are classes. restricted, prohibited and military operations area. obviously when the us airforce started the bombardments of Baghdad civil traffic was prohibited however not it is restricted meaning entry is allowed but under some conditions it is not allowed. same goes for afgan and in the utah desert where red flag takes place.

I do recall Richard Branson having difficulty getting permission to transit Libyan airspace back during his round the world balloon attempt.
AFAIK he was supposed to drop down over Chad and skirt around Libya.
I am not sure if the Breitling boys had the same issues.

Actually the above comment about diversions from Tel Aviv raises interesting question.
Where do Israeli flights divert to outside Israel and how did they manage back pre peace agreements with Jordan and Egypt ?

I am not allowed discuss …

Cyprus is a very short distance away, with nice long RAF airfields if required.
