I am on the look out for a new van and have been wreaking my head over which to go for, i need a lwb high roof van at least year 05....

I always thinking of one of the newer transits but so many people have put me of them nearly...then was told by few people dont touch vivaros, traffics, primastars which are all really the same van whith different badge and all come with problems mainly gearbox...

If had the money would go for one of the newer transporters but their price range is out of my league!

I really need this van within the next 2 weeks and am pulling my hair out as to waht to go for...So if anyone could advise on what they would go for and why that would be some help cheers

Transit first choice or for something a little left field an LDV

Mechanically solid but rust could be a future problem so it would be worth waxolying it

    hi thanks for your feedback...

yeah a transit is on the shortlist i think!

A mate bought one of the newer sprinters and less than 2 months was having problems, then there is the cost of parts and labour in garage, he wishes he didnt even look at it now...but hey we live and learn ;)

I have a 5 y.o Ren Master 120hp, lwb hi-roof, with 220k Miles on it and it goes like a dream. Very economical & reliable - and its had a lot of drivers ove rteh years.
Think most vans are reliable nowadays & for everyone that gets a recommendation, you will find others who have had bad experiences. :)

I'd be inclined to think Transit.

WRT the Sprinter or the VW equivalent (LT?), drive them first. I've had both as rentals, and found them very uncomfortable to drive (I'm tall, and I found the accelerator position in the VW awkward, to the point that I brought it back within 20km and changed it for a Transit).

Owners of Fiat Ducatos and the Peugeot & Citroën equivalents usually rate them highly. They're far more comfortable than a Transit if you'll be doing a lot of driving.

The sprinters are quick, and powerful, but for me it's transit every time, you may get overtaken by a sprinter... but you'll pass him out 10 minutes alter after he's broken down.

Has to be a transit, in RWD form. If you want a big van, that's simple, very capable and does exactly what you ask of it then there's nothing that comes near them.

As for LDVs the newest ones are absolute crap, the older ones with the peugeot and transit engines were ok, but really slow and pretty shocking build quality. If you mind one of the older ones, as in really baby it, then it'll be ok, but never as good as a transit.

The Ducato had a Maxi version which, IIRC, had twin tyres at the back, stronger suspension, and was good for heavier loads. I think that the engine may also have been a bit more powerful.

That is, as ever, open to correction.

just to update... i took a 07 t350 lwb h/r 2.4l (newer model) transit for a test drive today and have to say I liked the drive and control of the van on the road, nice power as well pretty impressed anyway, the milage was a bit over what im looking was just over 100k i pressed hard to get it down in price but seller was not moving at all so left and and am still looking...

A mate said he knows of a lad selling a transporter so will go see it tomorrow, any views or opinions on them?

The Turbo's in the Vivaro/primastar/master tend to go quickly if they're put under heavy loads day in and day out.

My dad has a 04 313cdi sprinter and the trouble he had was the ignition wires getting worn to shíte so it wouldn't start, some sort of pump to do with the turbo went, the glow plugs acted up last winter and had to be replaced along with something else.

I've had 4 different Masters down the years (some new, some 2nd. hand) since my first one in 2001, one (old model) had a stupidly heavy box body on it, it weighed in at almost 2,800kgs empty. All were worked hard and driven the bag out of, never had a turbo go, although I've heard of a few going on the older model (if they do go there is a Turbo off a Mitsubishi which is a direct replacement which is half the price and very reliable).

The box body did have a crown wheel and pinion go, the gearbox was replaced under warranty as a result and it also broke an engine mount and a rear shock top bolt. That was over the 3 years and 105,000 miles I had it.

The later model with the 6 speed box is a very nice van and easy enough on juice (Do transits still drink juice? I haven't had one since '88)

I had a couple of fairly worn 2nd hand Ducatos before the Masters but they have very light doors which results in problems with locks, hinges and runners, particularly if the SLD or back doors are forced closed on a big load, if a SLD is not not running right on any van walk away as it will break your heart.

It's only my opinion but if I were buying a van in the morning my first choice would be a Master.

Hiace if you want reliability, and people thinking you are selling knock off DVDs :o

Transit best of the rest IMHO.
