Advice for an aspiring student?

I'm in 6th year, hoping to start an Arts degree next year (Maths and Irish) to eventually become a teacher! I like researching what it'll be like but by the look of this forum I might not even get a job!

I was wondering if things are really that bad? I've never not wanted to become a teacher so I'm now looking into things I can do along side my course to improve my chance of getting hired. For example, I might do a Diploma in Irish alongside my degree, I'm hoping it'll look good on my CV.

There might be things you wish people told you before became a teacher.
Does anyone know any more ways that I could improve/prepare myself?

It's impossible to try and second-guess what the job market will be like in four or five years' time. You could choose something else that appears to have better employment potential only to discover you can't get a job in it.

Much better to train for something you really want to do, your interest and enthusiasm will show when you go for interview. There will always be some demand for teachers, go for it, and don't doubt that you will be one of the lucky ones.

The best 2 subjects to have.

Excellent subject choice. Irish saved my bacon manys a time, always seem to be hours going in it, not to mention teaching in a Gaelscoil. I would say do as much work in secondary schools as you can. Get involved with Big Brother, Big Sister or something similar. If you train in Galway get the volunteer cert. Don't bother with the Dip in Irish if you do the degree, it's rather futile. You'll be grand with those subjects.

as long as Irish remains a compulsory subject to get into college.

Or as long as maths does! Considering all the money being pumped into the new Junior and Leaving Cert you're safe for a while at least.
