    From www.independent.ie

    Friday October 29 2010

The seven-year-old daughter of Foreign Affairs Minister Micheal Martin has died.

It is understood Leana, the youngest daughter of Mr Martin and his wife Mary, suffered from a heart condition.

She died peacefully in Great Ormond Street Hospital, London.

Her parents and family were at her bedside.

Mr Martin and his wife said they are heartbroken at the loss of their "darling Leana".

"She was a beautiful light in our lives," they said.

RIP to the poor girl and sincere sympathies to the Martin Family.

I hadn't heard of anything before this afternoon. As someone who has lost a child my heart goes out to them. There are times when political parties and even economics count for little and this is one of them.

Rightly and appropriately by-passing political comment, as a father of four myself, I wish to extend my sympathies to the man as a father and to the family.

I'm sorry to hear of this loss to any family, including Mr. Martins.
Again, my deepest of sympathies to Mr. Martin and his family and wish them all the best at this sad time.

Story was updated a second ago..

"A spokesman for Minister Martin said she had been in Our Lady's Children's Hospital Crumlin for two weeks, before being transferred to Great Ormond Street Hospital in a critical condition earlier this week."

Very very sad... Similar to Michael Noonan (and what he went through with his wife while he was Minister), you sometimes forget that our politicians are ordinary people with normal families... RIP

I hate hearing about 'news' like this.

My eldest, and only, girl is 7. Extra hugs for all the kids tonight.

Hopefully the man above will have a warm bed and a soft teddy for her tonight. God bless her.

My thoughts are with them, and anyone who has lost a child. I can't even comprehend how painful that must be. And the fact that it is not their first loss is heartbreaking.

Very sad for the family. My parents know his familiy personally and whatever about his party the family are good and decent people. Must be a very hard time for them.

I honestly don't think anything can be more heartbreaking than a parent losing a child. An awful, awful tragedy for the Martin family. R.I.P.

RIP. To outlive a child is the cruelest fate for any parent.

    Sympathy to the family.

Making this its lead story and splashing it across the front page is totally insensitive of the "Irish Independent".

    Nobody deserves such a tragedy.

    RIP Leana.

Having a thread so people can offer their condolences in no way clashes with their wish for privacy on the issue.

Indeed, had read it, an incredibly well written and moving article. Michael Martin is to be admired for the courage to pay a tribute like that at a time of such hurt.

I saw that this morning, I think its very invasive and inappropriate of them.

They show the same type of photo when there are car accidents, murders, fires, sinkings etc.
