Hey guys, with all this Star Wars 3D/Blu-Ray commotion going on I thought I'd ask, can you rank YOUR FAVOURITE Star Wars films in order of preference? [I ran this by Galvasean beforehand about posting a potential "list" thread]
It'd be a lot easier if we called the episodes by name, so : Menace, Clones, Sith, Hope, Empire, Jedi.

    for example :

    1. Sith (Favourite)
    2. Empire
    3. Hope
    4. Clones
    5. Jedi
    6. Menace (least favourite)

I'd also like it if you could explain why a certain episode is your favourite, and same for your least favourite. Please don't knock others' opinions, as it's a favourites thead, not arguing what's the best one and why. I'm looking to get the general opinion of the boardsies on this one.

The example is actually my list; I love Sith so much, it squeaks past Empire at the post. Ep III because I loved seeing the heel turn of Anakin. The story of the Emperor finally taking control, twisting Anakin to do his bidding was just fantastic. Also there are plenty of lightsabre battles, but they all mean something -- take the ending 2; master Jedi trying to vanquish the new Sith lord; and two best friends now fighting to the death, Obi-Wan having to now try to kill the Sith 2nd in charge. The fall of the republic into a dictatorship, the beautiful CGI. The dark tone; even with the suitable comedy of the grasshopers. The music is just amazing, a tour-de-force as it contains music from all episodes, and some fantastic themes just for III. It made I and II seem like better films. From Order 66 onwards is just a master-stroke, a silent film. I love it to death. I actually shed a tear when Vader asked about Padme and then shouted "Noooooo!" as I thought about what would it be like if I lost my gf. Peter Cushing look-a-like at the end. The way everything ties together. It's just so, so fantastic. Sure the acting and dialogue is still a bit naff but the film is the absolute best Lucas could do with what he had.

Menace is my least favourite because I don't care about any of the characters, they're so weak and one-dimensional I couldn't describe them to you -- they're just there. I hate the racist stereotype Jar-Jar and the Gunguns, I don't care for the grasshoppers, terrible actor Jake Lloyd is awful, as is his storyline; and nobody listens to the boring Jedi's wise advice, so everyone just sits around and complains. Too much talk about politics and not enough sith talk. Long boring pod race, building to an idiotic clusterf**k of 4 storylines (Padme, Anakin, Maul, Gungan battle) and I only care about one of them. Just a horrible execution of boring characters and storylines. It's such a shame. The only redeeming factor is that Maul is cool, what with his like 4 scenes! It's definitely not enough. Episode II should've been Episode I, and Ep I should at best have been a 10-minute flashback sequence.

Anyway, there are my reasons, how do you rank the 6 star wars films? Why is one your favourite and one your least favourite? There's no right or wrong answer, please don't slag people off for loving one over another.

    • Empire (Favourite)
    • Hope
    • Sith
    • Clones
    • Jedi
    • Menace (least favourite)

For me each of the Star Wars films have their flaws.

Empire is my favourite, but the plot is very loose, it gets bogged down (literally) on the planet with Yoda and the end is a bit weak. Still, it’s the funniest, most dramatic by far, the acting is Oscar worthy compared to the other films and the soundtrack is ace. This is a real character piece, which is why it’s my favourite. The camaraderie at this point is flawless. I’ve watched this one the most times throughout the years. Prefer the 2004 special edition. 8/10

Star Wars is my second favourite. There’s only one major problem with the film which lets it down. After the robots escape and land on Luke’s planet, this film drags for a good thirty minutes. It’s very boring. Things only pick up after Han Solo helps them to escape. The acting is also a mixed bang, probably because the actors didn’t take it seriously enough. What’s great about the film is its (note to the prequels) very simplistic storyline. It’s by far the best of the series in that regard. With the exception of what I mentioned already, it’s hard to gripe about this film. Again, I must say that I prefer the 2004 special edition, even if the Jabba moments still don’t work. 7/10

Sith comes third and fixes a lot of the problems of the previous prequels. Dialogue is better than before, but the characters still come out with eye-rolling clangers about ‘killing younglings’ and some such. Acting is pretty nominal from everyone except Ian McDiarmid. He’s great fun throughout the prequels. Some of the fight scenes, particularly the end one, do drag on a bit. This is easily the darkest of the entire series and is how it should have been from the beginning of Menace. The story isn’t as messy as the previous two prequels and doesn’t feel as long, despite being a lengthily 2 ½ hours. 6/10

Clones is a mess, but I prefer it to Jedi and Menace, so it comes fourth. The film is way too long, has some horrible dialogue, repeats scenarios from the original trilogy (badly), the romantic subplot is forced, laughable and generally unconvincing. The acting from everyone (except McDiarmid) and the soundtrack is most unmemorable of the entire series. All these faults considered, it is still entertaining and the plot about the clones is very intriguing. I prefer CGI Yoda to Muppet Yoda from Menace, just looks far better. Also the fight between him and Dookuu (sorry, can’t be arsed to look up how to spell his stupid sounding name) is great fun. 5/10

Jedi is the messiest of the series. There are great points, but the bad points outweigh the great ones. At this point the series had descended into a giant toy commercial, the opening at Jabba’s palace is chocked full of utterly meaningless characters. Dialogue hit a new low in Jedi. Mark Hamill doesn’t seem to be reading a script, but a series of fortune cookies. What gets me the most about this one is that it all feels very baggy. The acting is a huge disappointment after Empire. Harrison ford and Carrie Fisher, look very bored and the enthusiasm just isn’t there anymore. The acting is painful to watch after the success of Empire. The end fight between Luke and Vader is exciting, but also very odd. Vader seems lethargic through-out and is far from the same person he was in Empire. Boba Fett is killed off way too quickly. As for the main plot, building a death star? Haven’t we been here already in Star Wars? It’s lazily writing. The sepical editions for Jedi are far worse than the original 1983 edition. 3/10

Menace. Just a bad movie. My biggest problem with it is that it is way too complicated for a film whose target audience is supposed to be under ten years of age. The only two positives of the film is the Duel of Fates song and the three way Jedi battle with Darth Maul, which is great 2/10

    1. Empire
    2. Hope
    3. Jedi
    4. Sith
    5. Menace
    6. Clones

I'm a HUGE SW fan... and I didn't find the prequel trilogy as odious as many did, but they still can't hold a candle to the original.

Empire is by far the greatest of all; it had everything and it also gave us the music of 'The Imperial March'... nuff said...

The prequels were simply not as good and did not have the same je ne c'est quoi of the others.

Favourite : A new hope is my favourite I think, I've seen it more imes than the others. The story is so classic at this stage. Though I acknowledge that Empire is probably the better film a new hope was the one I think of most fondly, it also kind of stands alone as a movie where as most of the others end on more of a cliffhanger.

Least Favourite : Ok I picked clones as the worst because until the last half hour its probably the most hammy and boring movie of them all. Yodas lightsaber fight is brilliant but it's the only bit that stands out. Menace ain't great but jar jar aside Liam Neeson is brilliant in it and its great to see Obi Wan as a Padwan, theres a lot of bull**** in it but casting Liam Neeson still remains one of Lucas' best decisions and thats why it would edge Clones which only had one decent lightsaber battle(and Janga Fett) as its saving grace.

Favourite : As Hope was the first one, for me this will be always be my favourite. I must have rented it 20 times as a kid. Epic stuff.

Least Favourite : Menace was bad, there is no getting away from that. Became like a childrens cartoon.

    1 The Empire Strikes Back
    2 Return of the Jedi
    3 A New Hope
    4 Revenge of the Sith
    5 The Phantom Menace
    6 Attack of the Clones

Whilst it's generally agreed that New Hope is better than Jedi, for whatever reason I just enjoy Jedi more. All of the top 4 I still enjoy today and could easily do a rewatch on a wet Saturday afternoon. After that there's a big drop off and 5th and 6th I find very hard to excuse even as a SW fan. They're completely misjudged and I wouldn't look forward to a repeat viewing. Doubly regrettable when you watch Sith and see it getting most things right.

This thread has inspired me to rewatch the old trilogy. Last time I watched them was when the Phantom Menace was released.

    I'll provide my list later.
