Right, i've brought in vehicles fromt he north and from the uk, both commercial and private taxed, quite a few at this stage, and as for normal vrt, i'm grand with that, doen it plenty.
Changing private to commercial, done that.

Now here's the thing, have never tried to change a commercial jeep to private tax....
and now i want to do it, crazy as it may sound, but i want to know do you have to pay vrt when changing a previously irish reg commercial taxed, and doe'd jeep to private tax?

Never even thought about it before. Rang the local revenue place, spoke to 2 rude and discourteous people, none of whom were very halpful, they passed me on to an even more rude man, who barked at me "the giy who deals with that isnt here call back in a week" so i did, now just getting a message minder.

Anybody have a number ofr a more helpful office or actually know the story with this?

Mmm, so much for 'public servants'

Can't help with a contact but is it worth trying the main VRO office in Rosslare?

If you are not changing the vehicle type, I don't see why you would pay VRT as it's already paid on first registration. Same if started life as an Irish passenger and was commercialised, they've already had a fair whack of VRT.

The whole commercial/private system is a mess but it's been well ranted on elsewhere.

It has i'll agree, so lets keep it sensible here.
Well i've two in mind, one which i own, one which i have an opprotunity to buy very cheap. One was a 4 seater isuzu MU 2.8 that had it's rear seats removed and was changed to commercial tax years ago, the other is a trooper that was commerical from the outset. The MU was a Japanese import when a couple of years old, the trooper was sold here new.

I may have to contact that office alright, but i dont think i'll get anywhere there fast, probably get what i need to know eventually, but having dealt with them about vehicles they didnt think existed (and spent 3 months fighting them to get something registered), i know how slow and stubborn they are too

AFAIK if it was imported as a commercial and VRT was paid at the commercial rate and you wish to change it to passenger you will now have to pay duty on it. I think there was a thread on here about it a good while ago

I would think in a logical world that seeing as there is a difference between the VRT on private and comm for the exact same car/van/jeep etc that there would be a cost to the change you are talking about.
However ! As per your 'Chats' with our public servants, I would think that with 50% of them you'll have to pay (Only God knows what) and the other 50% Couldnt care less and will let you on your way. I would suggest keep calling untill you get the ans you want and then try to get it in writing :o

what about the MU that was imported as a 4 seater and VRT'd as a car, then several years later later changed to commercial? Now the plan would be to change it back to private tax. I suppose you'd have to pay VRT all over again on it?

i bought a golf van new in 2008 and converted it back to a car last year and only had to pay 380...they said that the bulk of the vrt was paid when it was new... also the figure started out at 38 and then 270 and finally 380 so make sure you get it in writing
