A Strange looking Sky Dish

I was installing a Satellite dish on a house yesterday and noticed a strange looking Sky dish installed on a chimney next door heres a couple of photo's I took.

They are just upturned cable ties to keep the pigeons off.

A feral cat sleeps on the roof under my dishes. No bird problems.

Yes that's what the neighbour said he kept losing his Sat signal due to Birds perching on lnb arm so the Sky sub contractor came up with those spikes to keep them off what a joke he should'nt have installed the dish on the chimney in the first place a complete cowboy

Why was he a cowboy for installing the dish on the chimney? Most people want the dishes there instead of stuck on the front of the house for asthetic reasons.Anyway the 'bird spikes' do the job.

A Good Installer will put a dish at the back of the house or gable ends if there facing South 6 to 8 Feet from the ground is high anough less prone to highwinds and birds and easier to maintain and look a hell alot better

In fairness there could be a whole host of reasons as to why the installer didn't install on the back or side wall.

I would suggest that at least 50% of Satellite Dishes in this region of France are actually 'Chimney Mounted'.

(i have never seen them on sale in the UK), which, when used correctly in the best position with the Dish using the Chimney as shelter, is actually a very satifactory solution, and quite often, very discreet.
many of the usual installations in the Uk seem to be very ugly with dishes strewn over the walls of Houses in a 'Higgly d piggly d' way!!!
These are certainly NOT 'Cowboy Installations'.
we often have winds in this region in excess of 110kph/70mph and these systems work just fine, even when used with 80cm. solid Dishes!!

Your obviously not a qualified installer as I am when we did our course in the UK at the time it was run by the CAI no Satellite Dish was installed on a Chimney unless there was no other way of reception

I was just pointing out the different ways things are done in different Countries. Also the different types of fixings available outside the UK.

I have been installing here in the South of France for the past 5 years or so, using wall mounts where possible , but wanted just to point out that there are perfectly satisfactory ways of attaching to Chimneys where neccessary.
We have regular severe winds and the French Installers , as i pointed out in my previous post, do around 50% of their installations on Chimneys.
I dont think that describing such installtions as 'Cowboy' is correct and maybe the installers courses here in France have a range of different ways of installing to that in Ireland or the UK!!!!
I do stand by my view that most of the 'Sky dish installations' scattered over walls, with cables all over the place in the Uk are rather unsightly!!!

Maybe the owner of the property insisted the dish went on the roof ?, regardless of what advice if any they got.

In Northern parts of Norway & Sweden the dish must be > 80cm and on a pole above the chimney to get enough height for the low elevations, sometimes only 11 degrees.

You need to know what you are doing though.

a dish on a pole +/- 1 metre above chimney height wouldn't last a month down here....regular winds above 70 mph/110 kmh in this region!!! in fact i tried it on a specific install as this was the only spot to get any reception.....in the end i extended the chimney by1,5 metres (at quite an extra cost) so the dish could be sheltered by it!!!! needless to say i did use a chimney Bracket and there has been no problems since!!
