KCR builder providers doing 40Kg BNM Black Diamond for €14.50 picked up (smokeless obviously)
Not sure if they do delivery but this is the cheapest I've seen in Dublin to date

There is cheaper in other parts of the country, Bolands in Arklow are doing it for €11.50 (same bags) and I think Connaught Gpld Stores are doing something similar

Thanks for that info Hick, am doing my homework before I start lighting the fire this winter. Appreciate all price checks ;)

I would welcome any information on delivered prices for the Lucan (Co. Dublin) area if anybody has it. Thanks w4m

I know smokey coal is illegal, but if you're lighting fires, its the only way to go. they smokeless stuff is utterly useless compared to it.

Ring up any 'small' provider in dublin and they'll source it for you, it'll be a bit more expensive, but the difference is incredible.

'smokey' coal is not illegal, you can burn it anywhere, however against the law to sell it in a smokeless area

I regularly ferry a bag of the "proper" coal to my mother when I'm coming up from Kerry. Its around the €15 mark in a lot of garages/ co-ops down there for the 40kg bag. I know one person who throws two of them into the boot when traveling back to Dublin from a weekend at home.

    What is "proper" coal?
Reminds me of the good old days when we used to bring back the rashers and sausages from the country as they were "proper" :-)

Quinns in Naas and Athy very good value.
    Loads of types.
Cheaper coal - 40kg for around €13.50 a bag, superior polish is about €15 for 40kg.
Anthrasite is about 17 I think. Logs - 3.50 for a decent big bag (better than what you find in shops and garages).

Its the dirty, oiley, smokey coal that burns good and hot! :D
(as opposed to the smokeless coal).

Not disparaging the op in any way but Im not a fan of the smokeless stuff. Good value in the op if its all you can get but I the smokey stuff is much better imo.

I'm hearing great things about columbian coal - rocket fuel for the fire apparently. anyone used it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,506 ✭✭✭dowtchaboy

That cheap fuels place just East of Youghal (ummm.... possibly called "Discount Fuels"!?) that does excellent price on Diesel and Petrol had Polish coal at 10.95 a bag, and 11.95 for smokeless.

My local coalman is gonna get a bollocking next time I see him - he charged Herself €76 for 4 bags on ordinary Polish coal last week (ie €19) - €8 per bag for delivery is a bit much, I think.

The farmer's Co-Ops usually do deals every winter - often 5 for price of 4.

If you are getting coal delivered watch out for an old trick we used to see when we lived in Dumpland - coalman says your bunker can take say 5 bags, and he leaves the empty bags there as "proof" he delivered 5 - but what you don't notice is that on one of his carry-ins, he has an extra empty bag on his shoulder.

No coal in Bolands in Arklow for the above price but found a fuels supplier in ballyduff just outside Arklow selling colombian coal for €13 for 40kg bag and am burning it now and its great.

Oops! I owe my coalman a mental apology it seems - those bags at Discount Fuels for 10.95 are 20 Kg, not 40 Kg!
Sorry if I sent any of you on a wasted journey.

Anybody know a decent place around Kildare/ Newbridge/ Naas etc?
Closest "bargain" I've seen is €32 (IIRC) for 4 x 20kg bags at the Top fuel station at Whitesland Ind Est in Kildare town.

I'm a coalman myself and charge 15 euro for polish coal. Don't be fooled into buying some other kind of cheap coal. It might seem a good at the time but when you burn it you'll find it hard to get heat off it and can be really messy.
I recently bought a "cheaper" load of coal from the north and delivered to my customers and they did not like it. The bags it came in were plastic and kept ripping when lifting also the dust when you opened it was very bad. It took ages to light and when it did it gave out flip all heat.

Ok - I have to ask - why is a coalman presumably with the muscle to heft 40 kg bags of coal about, using a name like "Little Bubbles"?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 268 ✭✭Little Bubbles

I have that name since my rugby days. I can assure you nothing small about me. As for bringing the bags there is a great way to do it. Coalmans secret!!

I picked up a 20Kg Economy coal in Fraser petrol st in Kilcullen on Friday for E5.99.
Burns great and nice big chunks too :D
