Yeah, big stupid fcuking mistake, I know.

Right, my tank was all but empty, so I went to fill up. Just realized after filling 6.4 Litres up, that it was Petrol. Couldn't believe I made such a stupid mistake. Anyway, rang a mate, he said to fill it upto the brim with Diesel, which I did, another 35 odd Litres, I think.

Then I'd to drive home, which was about 7 Miles.

So, what should I do? Will the car be okay?

    Any other help/advice!?

    Cheers

As far as I recall from similar threads it should be ok as it's a low enough petrol content. Someone with a definitive answer should be on soon.

It'll be fine and might actually do your engine a bit of good. The ratio is near 5:1 which should be fine.

    Relax.

I work for a breakdown company and get this all the time........ sounds like a very small tank 35+6.4.....41.4 sounds like a small tank what are you driving?? was it not really empty when you were filling up?? Did you fill it to the neck with the Diesel after you had been advised by your mate?

Yeah, its an 03 Corsa 1.3. It was empty enough, like the red diesel light was on. Yep, I filled it up right to the top

I think a lot will depend on the particular engine antomorro-sei. Probably with an old fashioned basic diesel engine it will do no harm worth and maybe even might be good for it! Would help emmissions. I worked in a filling station and a lot of guys would put a few litres of petrol into their diesel tank and then fill up with diesel if they had DOE coming up...would improve emissions they would say. With a newer more sophisticated diesel you may not be so lucky though. Chances are you may damage or even have damaged injectors or other components...Perhaps somebody may be better qualified to advise in this regard though as would not know a whole lot myself. To minimise your chance of damage if you are going to keep driving I would advise you top up (with diesel) as regular as you can in next few 100 miles.

By the way Hunter164 you seem to have a rather strange sense of humour.

Fill it with diesel again when you get a chance but you should be grand. Fathers done it many a time and he just kept popping a tenner in as it got lower...

Cheers, well its an 03 car, so I dunno if thats a "modern" diesel.

It's cool, Hunter164 is a mate. He's just taking the piss!

Sorry mate, couldn't let this go:p

Seriously though, could happen to the pope. Hope it goes alright for you.

The chances of damaging injectors at that ratio of diesel/petrol is minimal. The damage is done by lack of lubrication from the diesel that isn't present in petrol, but as stated the ratio as above is definitely enough to keep them lubed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 656 ✭✭✭smokie2008

Yeah well as Quazzie said you'll be fine, the Ratio limit is 5:1, your a little over but a bit of petrol in a Diesel is actually good for the car. when it gets to half empty just fill it back up again, and if its a little smokie from your exhuast now don't worry it'll clear up!!

Sound for the replies. I've to drive to Kilcullen tomorrow which is roughly a 50 mile round trip, so I'll fill it up again after that.

    Hope it'll be grand.

Fill it when you get there and fill it when you get back just in case ;)

i know my uncle who drives a delivery van puts a drop of petrol into it when filling it with diesel to give the injectors etc a god clean out but i couldnt tell ya the ratio he does it at though.he been doing this for years so i presume it wont do much damage

Did this a few weeks ago with my brand new 10D car. Not just a few litres, filled it over half way from empty, drove it away down the road and kept driving till it came to a shuddering halt.

Despite the fact that you hear all the horror stories about common rail engines being wrecked etc, I got the car back by lunchtime the next day all present and correct - cost me about 170 all in and that included the 70 diesel they put in the tank for me.

    Wont make that mistake again.

    Hi anewme,

Can I ask where you got it sorted as thats a good price? I'm in the Dublin area. I did the exact same last night and my car is currently sitting in the drive way half filled with petrol after me driving it for a few miles and finally konking out! (Seriously couldnt figure it out for ages as I've never made that mistake before!) Had to get a recovery truck to tow it back to the house. Even he tried to start it a few times so engine is well and truly contaminated with pertol!
    Thanks!
    Caroline

I hope you don't ever need to make a warranty claim on any part of the fuel system...

How does this happen? I live in the US and you can only put petrol in a petrol car and diesel in a diesel car. The nozzles are different and won't go in the wrong tank. Why isn't Ireland the same?

It's obvious you've never been to Ireland. People in charge of things are very stupid and slow at doing new, beneficial things.

The mum did this at some stage - never got better MPG out of a tank...

The Diesel nozzle is bigger than the petrol, so its not as easy to put diesel in a petrol, but it doesn't help people putting petrol into a diesel car.
How are the nozzles in the US shaped?

It'l be fine. Don't drive it flat out, 'till you dilute it further.
