Registration Certificate

Could they make these things any more obtuse? It's a Registration Certificate on the outside and a Certificate of Registration and Licensing on the inside, inapplicable fields are left blank OR filled in with a zero, and despite a design that I'm guessing was developed for technical accuracy, they can't actually get the data right; for example, according to the cert that just arrived through my door, my new* saloon has 3 seats. It's a 3 seat saloon. Now I know some of my relations are fat, but I'm pretty sure they don't take up the whole back seat.

Anyway, pardon the rant, I do actually have a question. According to the NCT website, the date of first registration should appear in (B), or (I) if it was imported after the 31st of July 2008. On my car, which I'm pretty sure /wasn't/ imported+, the date 10-Oct-2000 appears in (I), yet the Date of First Licencing in IRL in (B.1) is 15-Oct-2000, which doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. The DoT says the exact opposite:
    DoT wrote:
The vehicle was registered new in Ireland 10 October 2000. If it was imported (B) would show the date it was registered in another country. When(B) is blank this indicates the vehicle is new.

What exactly is the difference between Licencing and Registration, and has the NCT got it exactly the wrong way around?

    Thanks,
    adam

    * New to me. Actual new cars are a nonsense best left to Lotto winners, sales reps, and the credulous.

+ Delivery and service history, I even have the letter congratulating the owner on his purchase! :)

Way back when, before we had one log book, cars were issued with 2 certs. There was the licensing cert, and the registration document. The licensing cert was yellow/greenish, and the registration sheet was blue (I could have gotten that backwards).

When putting a new car on the road, it usually got registered in Rosslare first, then a few days later it would be licensed by Shannon (I may have gotten that backwards too). That should explain the difference in the 2 dates. I think the DoT's advice only applies to cars with the new fancy pants logbooks.

Regardless of what format the Cert takes up, it can only be as accurate as whats put in by the human in front of the computer and where there humans, there human error.

There's a difference between human error and stupidity. It's a saloon. End of story.

It's funny how government departments can be so different. The Revenue people are incredibly efficient and helpful, they always reply to enquries within 24 hours, and even send taxbacks without delay. Cork County Council often reply within the hour. But Transport takes a day to forward to someone else, another day to actually reply - with something short and snippy - and then they ignore follow up questions. It's just a pain in the hole.

"B" is date of first registration in case vehicle was imported. It shows the date of first registration in previous country.

"I" is a date of registration in Ireland (the day VRT was paid)

"B.1" is the date when the motor tax was first paid for the vehicle. On this day the proces of issuing VRC starts as well.

Call them with wrong info in field S.1 as this is serious mistake. Now in case you carry 4 or 5 people, you insurance company might refuse to pay a claim because it's not legal for you to carry any more then 3.

    ok...quick question...

You know how it goes...you check your tyres, give the car a good clean, get it serviced, align the lights...drive from dublin to home town where the car is due to have nct test at 8am tomorrow morning...only to find you have left the log book in Dublin..

My question is....is there any point in getting up and driving down to the test centre just to be sent away?
Do you have to have the log book? I have my licence, i have my insurance, i have my booking paperwork...i am grasping at straws here, hoping for some positive feedback that might give me some hope!!

    Thanks...

You shouldnt need the log book for the test. They do list it as being required but Ive never been asked for it

I've never actually been asked for it, but I've presented it at every NCT and they've always looked at it?
