"Keith" cheated DCM

OK, so there is no evidence to suggest that this person didn't run the full distance. But I'd be fairly sure that they didn't pay their entry fee so must have cheated the organisers out of their money and been on the course where he wasn't entitled to be.

    picture.php?albumid=299&pictureid=7695

So other than now appearing in the collection of my photos on ExpensiveRaceFotos.com did they get allowed across the finish line and claim a medal and t-shirt etc.

I'd probably not be quite as annoyed if it wasn't for the fact that when I finally get around to buying the picture of ME doing my marathon from this Monday, there is going to be a bunch of shots of this interloper in there as well. He is even happily playing up to the photographer in another shot.

Was his DCM number on his back and he was showing off that he did the great south run on Sunday?

Robin I wouldn't be wasting my time worrying about the odd cheating tw@t. Life's too short. St Peter will have a big black mark against his name when he gets to the Pearly Gates.

It's from the Great Yorkshire Run, and look like his name was Laura in that race. :D

From my memory,at the fininsh, the chip was removed and two separate marks were put on the official number, using markers, before and after goody bag was given out. As already said he may have been wearing no on back.

Got talking to one of the stewards along the finishing straight just after Nassua St., and he told me his job was to "divert" any runners without numbers.
This, however, would not have prevented "our friend" above from finishing (as he was wearing an {albeit fraudulent} number).

Incidentally the steward told me that they had to remove 30 or 40 "no number" runners during the course of last Monday.

"What if their number/bib had just fallen off" I asked.

"In my 30 odd years of running races/marathons, my bib has never fallen off, and I don't know of any such incident with my running peers. And I'm going back to a time when numbers were printed on heavy cardboard, which when wet would disintegrate and fall to pieces. At the very least there should be a couple of safety pins left in the runners vest", was his informed reply.

Yep, he did get a tshirt and medal. He has a picture up on his Facebook profile which I easily found from what I presume was his girlfriends name on the Great Yorkshire Run results.

    :(

Still an infringement of the rules:

"The official race number must be worn on the front. Failure to do so could result in you being stopped on the route"

The italics and bold are taken verbatim.

Why do some people think that they are above such a simple & straightforward instruction?

Ok I accept your point - I am still basking in the feel good factor and am well disposed towards all mankind ( apart from my neighbours with the barking dog )

Last year I saw one person without a number get taken out just 100 metres from the line. The guy was on the verge of tears pleading with the steward but to no avail.

    It was fantastic.

As a newcomer, I am in awe of the amount of work organisers put in, so you are right, running without paying fee would be pretty mean.

classic cheaters beware Chief Inspector Robin is about. I know of 2 guys (and are outstanding athletes) who did something similar on Monday. They were pacing people so I guess they didn't want to be pulled off the course. I can kind of understand (so long as they don't interfere with other runners and don't use feed/water stations etc) this but the 2 guys in question actually ran the entire thing and crossed the finish line. Don't know if they tried to claim a goody bag.

Have you emailed his picture to the DCM organisers?

I'm sure they a million and one things to do but it might help?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,320 ✭✭✭MrCreosote

He probably just left it too late to enter.

If only his thread looking to transfer an entry hadn't been locked...

Well both "Keith" and his buddy "Daithi", who appear in a couple of pictures together on marathonfoto.com, are both wearing medals on the Facebook pictures.

I think it's taking the piss and showing a lack of respect towards the race organisers and the people who entered the race "properly" and paid money in order to contribute to the running of the race.

And isn't pacing illegal? I know that there are generic pacing groups but didn't both the first and second irish women in last years race get warnings for being paced around the course? And that was by people on bikes not by people running alongside them which would be seen as a bigger advantage?

I really dont see much point in getting too worked up about this. Its not like you were cheated out of a medal by him, its not like he was doping and as a result you ended up coming 4th rather than getting a medal. In this case you still have your medal and your finishing time which is what you were after, so mission accomplished on your part.

Its his problem that he is so sad and pathetic to pretend to all his mates that he ran the marathon, and shame on his mates if they believe him considering the obviousness of the fake number.

They should send him an invoice for the entry fee, plus a late payment fine, plus a fine for being an idiot.

If thats the case anyone who finiched after the first 3 hours paces should be Disqualified :) . So the only finishers of the marathon were people who go in before the first 3 hour pace.

He shouldn't have done it, he shouldn't think that he got away with it, it's cheating the marathon out of money, it's just plain dishonest and wrong ... but I can't think of a way of making that point without either sounding petty to the DCM organisers, or getting in a mess on Facebook with him.

I just hope he legs were in a worse state than mine and his blisters get infected, or something like that. :D

:) I know, I have to admit, I'm not entirely sure about the distinctions between having pacing groups and being paced. Actually if someone could explain that would be great.

Even as I was typing out my last post and the way the article was worded, I couldn't really distinguish if it was due to being paced/coached or due to having bikes on the course or both or which was more serious.

I am pretty sure I saw several cheaters in the race on monday. Passing by Milltown at about 18-19 miles I saw several walkers who didn't look like they had been running and pulled up injured. lets just say their build and walking pace suggested that they probably didn't make it to 30km in under 2.5 hours ;)

To be honest, I'd steer clear of the whole facebook as it kind of smacks of cyber stalking.

However, I really don't think it's any harm to contact DCM about it. I'm sure they take it very seriously and would be glad to hear of support for this stance in the wider running community.

It's all about getting the message out that this is not acceptable behaviour.

And while I know it's really easy to feel very frustrated and thwarted by someone's behaviour, it is a very small majority.

some walkers went through 10 miles just after the lead group ;) must have set off at 8am.
I think there are people who do that ever year.

Especially if they're on bikes- that's just plain cheating, and a bit sad.

I think outside influences should be banned- whether that's somebody handing out drinks at a certain point, or a group of cyclists keeping pace/carrying gels/motivating etc. Internal influences like a pacing group or other competitors are fine.

Doesn't a number of athletes, usually the top guys, have their own drinks. What is wrong if somebody outside the 'officials' hand out a drink?

Ok I just read the rules.

    http://www.bcathletics.org/main/rr_iaaf.htm

    Drinking/Sponging and Refreshment Stations
    8. (a) Water and other suitable refreshments shall be available at the start and finish of all races.
    (b) For all events up to and including 10km, drinking/sponging shall be provided at suitable intervals of approximately 2-3km if weather conditions warrant such provision.
    (c) For all events longer than 10km, refreshment stations shall be provided at approximately every 5km. In addition, drinking / sponging stations for water only shall be placed approximately midway between the refreshment stations or more frequently if weather conditions warrant such provision.
    (d) Refreshments, which may be provided either by the Organising Committee or the athlete, shall be made available at the stations nominated by the athlete. They shall be placed so that they are easily accessible to, or may be put by authorised persons into the hands of, the athletes. Refreshments provided by the athletes shall be kept under the supervision of officials designated by the Organising Committee from the time that the refreshments are lodged by the athletes or their representatives.
    (e) An athlete who collects refreshment from a place other than the refreshment stations renders himself liable to disqualification.

    .

Use of bikes is certainly cheating and warrants an immediate DQ.

I know a number of the Irish guys running 2.35 and quicker that will get people to pace them who will just run to halfway or 20 miles though. It is always done with the permission of the DCM through various sources. I don't really see what's wrong with it. It's good for the marathon to have Irish guys running as quickly as possible.

Completely agree with this, surely it's just smart to get your drinks at specific points?

Wow. Does this mean that all the people who come out around the course for the last 6 miles with jellies and bananas and drinks to help struggling athletes are risking geting them DQ's??

Its not cheating, he ran 26.2 miles. So he didn't pay. I think we will see more of this in the future.

He's welcome to run 26.2 miles around Dublin anytime he wishes, except for last Monday when those roads were closed for the use of people who had paid to enter the Dublin Marathon.

I'd have to agree with you on this point.

However, I think what people have a problem is people who are "mid pack" (can't think of a better term to describe it - not meant in a derogatory/sneering sense) who are doing this. This whole "well I think it's a good idea but I'm different/special/better so I don't have to follow the rules" mentality.

The case in point that springs to mind is being on parking duty for a local race. The amount of people that seem to think it's perfectly acceptable to pull up and block the road the race will be on "because I'll be in and out in five minutes only collecting my number" is unbelievable - they don't seem to realise that if everyone has the same attitude that chaos ensues. Pain in the arse the lot of them.

I think the claim is that he cheated DCM out of their money.

I couldn't care less if someone decides to run for free as long as they don't disrupt my race. But I do expect race organisers to attempt to pull them out of the race though.

Of course it's still perfectly plausible that the guy did pay and lost his race number. In a panic, he grabbed a friend's race number on the morning of the race.

Morally I don't agree with what 'Keith' is perceived to have done, however there's nothing anyone (organisers, stewards, authorities) can do to stop someone running 26 miles on the course (excluding starting pens and finishing area) on the October Bank Holiday Monday and any attempt to do so could potentially end up messy if an injury happened.
