external hard drive transfer suddenly very slow

    hi guys,
I have a 250GB Western Digital external hard drive which i took out of the external enclosure and put in into my pc as a secondary drive. i did this as the adapter for the external enclosure died and i was waiting to get another one. The hard drive is perfect and worked in my pc without any problems. for example 700mb of data would transfer in a very short space of time, 5 mins maybe.
Now, i then took it out of the pc and placed it back in the enclosure once i got my new adapter. Now the hard drive is extremely slow. it would take an hour to copy 700mb of data which is a disaster. i ran the chkdisk utility on teh disk with error. everything seems to be fine.
I took the drive out of the enclosure and tried put it in my pc again. same result, copying takes forever!

From my research on google ppl think that the hard drive is on the way out! if that was the case how come windows can see it and i can do everything i want with it, only thing is that copying takes forever.

if anyone has any suggestions on this it would be great.

Western Digital have a diagnostic tool which will check the SMART data and run some tests etc.

Also how much space is left on the disc, and how fragmented is it?
