Hi lads, just wondering how you started out doing what you do (qualification wise) how long it took and if it costs an awful lot?

Any info would be great. :)

Depends on which way you go. There are a few different places offering courses - NCEF, NTC, K2NY etc. All teach fairly much the same thing for roughly the same price.
Important thing is to choose a course that will allow you to get Insurance afterwards - no insurance means qualification is no good.

Check the websites and you will get differing info on each. NCEF only does to Fitness Instructor with Personal Trainer and higher as seperate courses. Several offer the fitness instructor and Personal trainer as one.

Also, decide what type of specialisation you want to do. NCEF is more of a catch all course with a bit of everything included and specialisation coming with further courses - you are qualified to do just about everything fairly ok even if you have no interest in that area
NTC (from what I have seen) allows more specialisation in certain areas. Haven't done much with them but their courses seem to be in addition to the original qualification and don't have to be done.

However, there seems to be Industry recognition of each others courses. If you want to specialise in certain areas, different places require that you already hold a qualification in fitness but are relaxed as to who the qualification is with. Reebok do courses within Ireland as do Boxercise and a few others. Insurance Companies are fairly ok with other qualifications and cover you to practice them BUT the basic qualification is the big thing.

Expect to take about 6 months (full time) to a year (part-time) to get a fitness instructors qualification costing about €2000. Another 2/3 months for personal Trainer costing between €500 and €1000. The application process can take a while - If you want a qualification by end of 2011, best start applying now for courses starting new year. And you are back in college - continuous assessment, projects, written theses etc. As a fitness Instructor, you will HAVE to be able to project your presence and voice - it is not a course designed for someone who wants to stay at the back of the class and out of the limelight. Example of assessments would be you, on your own, leading a class of 20 people in Step Aerobics with 3 testers sitting watching your performance and marking you.

    Hope this helps.
