    Run a mile!!!!

Of course a breeder will know how many dogs and bitches they have in a litter, they would know this the minute the pups are born so i would seriously question what kind of a breeder they are.

Im guessing its probably a puppy farmer who probably hasnt even gone near the pups since they were born

Where on the internet did you find this breeder anyway? I can probably hazard a guess anyway:rolleyes:

What kind of dog are you looking for and i can try and recommend someone for you.

would it not make sense to rescue one of these dogs from...rather than encourage the OP to run away?

Absolutlely not! The more these types of breeders are encouraged the more they will keep producing litters with no care for the mother and pups.

Supply and demand! If there is no demand for these pups then they wont be churning out litter after litter with no care and thought put into it.

Unfortunately you have to walk away from these types of scenarios and not line the pockets of these so called breeders.

my dad thought this yrs ago and while we were glad he did it, a red setter, we had nothing but prob from day 1. including parvo. this dog, while we all loved him, it was on hindsight the worst decision ever. Not only on money but heartbreak. This BREEDER, we used to keep track of him, went on for yrs breeding these poor sick puppys.
Its true what Andrea says, while hard, the best thing to do is walk. While people continue to give money to these PEOPLE, they will continue to breed.

Sounds very dodgy - I would not buy a pup from this person at all. IKC reg does not mean the person is a good breeder or that they take good care of their dogs. It is the bare minimum that can be expected from a breeder. If you have your heart set on a pure breed pup that is IKC reg, contact the IKC breed secretary and they should be able to give you the number of some breeding kennels. Always ask for health check certs for the parents (make sure to do lots of research on the breed so that you know what to ask about and also to make sure it is the right breed for you) that are signed off on by specialists and make sure to see pups with mother, where they are kept and the father if possible. If anything feels dodgy, it probably is and walking away is the best option.

+1 on rescuing a puppy (if you are not set on getting an IKC reg pure breed). There are so many pups in rescues around the country, in lots of shapes and sizes, looking for a home. May be a good idea just to look into, even if you aren't set on it. You could find the perfect pet in a rescue, and you would be helping a pup that otherwise would have been unwanted.

Go for a rescue. I found mine & he is wonderful !. Be very wary of seeing a litter of puppies in a nice house with kids etc. The puppy farmers "employ" accomplices - after all you wouldn't go to the puppy farm to buy. You see what you believe to be homebred puppies & the bitch with them may not even be the mother.

why does everyone tink its a puppy farmer??
i would imagine a puppy farmer would be well able to tell how many dogs and bitches, i would imagine its more than likely a person with no experiance of breeding who bred off there pet dog

I would of thought that anyone who bred a litter at home couldn't wait to handle their pups & see what sex they were.

its sad to say but i'm sure there are some people who genuinely could'nt tell a bitch from a dog, who still think they should bred pups just because they have a bitch

i just looked at the op again, i have left bitches for longer than 4 days before handling the pups, only if it was a nervous bitch and i could see all the pups looked healthy, most bitches like a bit of privacey, but i would not be advertising pups untill they were older and i knew what sex they were

Because responsible, good breeders will know exactly what is happening with the mother and her pups when they are born, not days after. The dogs will be well handled from the start and they need to be able to check that all pups are healthy etc when they are born and they will check each of the pups.

Puppy farmers are not just people who have huge numbers and dogs and litters, they are people who are producing puppies just to line their own pocket with little or no regards for the mother and pups.

Even a nervous bitch (which shouldn't be bred from in the first place, temperament is as important as health) needs to be brought outside to go to the toilet and stretch her legs giving the breeder plenty of time to assess the litter.
I'm with everyone else, OP walk away from this litter and try the IKC for a list of good breeders for whatever breed you're interested in.

Thank you all for your replies. We wont get a puppy from this breeder as we are looking for a male puppy and the breeder just found out that there is no male for us (scared of the knowledge what we have already with the breed:P). We contacted the IKC for a list of breeders thTats what we got as an answer:
Sorry we don't have a listing.
Please forward your postal address for a list of dog shows and you could
make contact with owners at the shows.

Really poor in my opinion. But hoenstly now it's not important for us anymore if the puppies are reg. with the IKC. Seems worthless. We will better check the breeder by ourselfes (mean doing a homevist to the breeder, see where the puppies are keept etc.);)

If you are adamant about a specific breed then there may be a Breed Club that keeps lists of breeders. What breed are you looking for ?.

Do bear in mind that IKC papers can be forged.

Have you been to the Dogs Trust ?.
