    Apparently this is it:

Looks ok but it better not be the PSP2.

    -Runs Android
    -512MB of RAM
    -1GB of ROM
    - 4" screen (ish)

Can't really see the point of this. I can't see many making a game specifically for this unless it has significantly better specs than other android phones which I doubt it will. By making a game specifically for this you're missing out on the x millions of other android phones out there. And if no one is gonna make a game just for this then the extra controls are useless.

Nice controls for the ps1 and snes emulators etc....

I was hoping it would be able to play PSN games. Wishful thinking on my part.

Rumours are that Sony will be bringing out their own games SDK that will give greater performance gaming to Android. Also, the fact that it has buttons is a massive plus.

I'd consider ditching my Desire for one of these depending on it's reception in the media (and my own hands-on if possible)

I reckon it is a fake also. Front is basically a Sony ericsson Vivaz and control section looks fairly fake in my opinion.

I reckon it's real. Sony are going to have to release a mobile phone/gaming platform because that's the way the market is heading with apple doing steady business and xbox on WP7 just getting going.

Personally I only own an iPhone, and really only play puzzle games on it. I tried a few sports/action games but the iPhone really suffers for it's lack of physical buttons on those more traditional genres.

The Sony playstation phone with it's physical button's would make these games far more playable. It's multi-touch pad looks like it's a good substitute for dual analogue sticks too.

As far as graphics quality goes, look at videos for Epic Citadel on the iPhone 3GS & 4, it looks amazing, better even than graphics on the PSP. This phone has higher specs than the iPhone and with sony's gaming background there is no reason the playstation phone should not feature even better graphics.

I'm led to believe it's real and that it's basically a Sony Ericsson phone with a PSP2 built in. The PSP2 stuff doesn't run on Android.

PSPGo didn't fail because of its form factor. It failed because it was a more expensive machine that played less games than other versions of PSP.

The PSPGo form factor is actually quite nice. And if you wanted to make a smartphone that could play PSP2 games, wouldn't a slider design like that spring to mind? You want it to be able to easily turn itself back into a normal looking smartphone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,561 ✭✭✭✭Varik

If they had a psp phone in the same form of the slim thenthat would be more likely to fail if it was that large, a slider is the only way to have the buttons without having a huge phone.

One of Sony's biggest advantages over MS is that they do mostly entertainment and industries that relate to it, if Sony could allow for most cross product intergration and have more of their movies/music/devices working together they could give apple a run for it's money.

If speculation is true you might have a few different form factors to choose from :)

Sony's been talking about their mobile strategy during an earnings call, and you could read some interesting things into their comments.

    http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/29/sony-earnings-call-entertains-playstation-phone-reveals-tablets/
As for the new PSP product, as mentioned, I know that you are not asking me to tell you when we will be coming out with a new product, but there is a gaming market based on [the] cellphones, and there are many changes that are being seen [with] Nintendo, as well as ourselves, in the field of the product for the gamers. And there are smartphones and others or even cellphones gaming markets are very popular here in japan. So the market itself is very... expanding.
Of course, we can't talk about specific products, but smartphones and tablets... it is difficult to tell you how we can put the games on them, but they are not going to be planned in different parts of our company. When we organized ourselves last April, we introduced network services, and within that umbrella, network services, all of these products are handled. Therefore, the planning and the prototypes for various content [are] all carried out within this... one umbrella. So we are trying to figure out what we can do as Sony in this market.
There [are] so many different elements. There is Sony Ericsson and there is SCE. They moved from Aoyama, the design and headquarters had to come to Sony City. Of course this contributes to savings on rent on an office... but they are [also] closer to the planning and engineering group of Sony, and I think we can better incorporate all of these capabilities better... so when the timing is right we can probably announce [to] you about the new product that we have.

The ideal outcome, IMO, is that there's a PSP2 and then Sony will embed the same platform and technology into a range of other devices - like Sony Ericsson phones, like the tablet devices he mentions.

That could be a very interesting proposition. They could potentially reach a much wider audience than with a single standalone handheld like the PSP, and it would simultaneously give their Android devices a very unique selling point. The one area Android is weak in right now versus iPhone/iPad is gaming, and Sony could solve that problem exclusively for their own devices.

iPhone reaches many pockets and then people have latterly discovered that the gaming on them is fun. Closet gamers, if you like. Nothing marks out a iPhone owner as a gamer, but games are the dominant app on that platform. Sony should equally aim to get Playstation compatible devices into people's hands without them even necessarily knowing they can play Playstation games, and then let them discover themselves the gaming side of the device. That way their content, their games, aren't limited to 'geeky' Playstation-specific devices that mark you out easily as a gamer.

I have heard from some connected friends in the UK that the phone is indeed a phone version of the PSP2, so I'm hoping this will come to fruition.

Branded as part of Sony Ericsson's "Xperia" series, the device is powered by a Qualcomm Adreno 205 GPU, along with a 1GHZ Snapdragon processor. Tech nerds will want to know that its being benchmarked at an already impressive 59.1fps, which could improve as hardware and software is finalized.

Other key notes about the alleged hardware:
    • 1,5000mAh battery
    • 854 x 480 resolution on a 4-inch LCD
    • 5 megapixel autofocus camera, LED flash
    • 512MB RAM, 512MB ROM
    • microSD slot
    • SIM slot
    • micro-USB
    • A second microphone for active noise cancellation

These new leaks also confirm "PlayStation Pocket" software, although it's unclear what the application will be used for. The easy conclusion to jump to would be games, but what kind of games? PlayStation Portable titles, PSP Minis, or a completely new line-up of software? Given the system's specs, it seems it should be able to play current PSP titles with ease, although the lack of an analog nub could cause compatibility issues.

Could be wrong but the two circles in the middle could be used as touch sensitive analog sticks. not perfect but better than none

There are but it's closer to older Pointing stick that laptops sometimes or turning a optical mouse upside down and using you finger over it, using a normal touch pads would suffer as different parts of your thumb will affect it but there is no physical analog stick.

Not that great. The rumoured specs are behind the curve of the announced phones at CES. Also, LCD screen? Why it will be very hard to see the phone screen in daylight outdoors. People are predicting about a 7 hour battery life on the rumoured specs, way to little on a phone.

Again all predictions based on rumour.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,578 ✭✭✭WarZoneBrother

How much do you guys think this would cost.? I think it probably be 500-600 which may be a bit expensive and not sure if it would beat iPhone.. I should start saving anyways would love this phone..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,682 ✭✭✭LookingFor

I think it's probably clear now that this is not a phone version of the PSP2. Which is sort of a shame, but maybe that was unrealistic to expect for the moment.

This Playstation Pocket business sounds like another brand aimed at phone/tablet gaming ala iOS. The less costly end of the market. From what sony's hinted at at CES it might live inside a number of mobile Sony devices, phones, tablets etc.

Then PSP2 I guess will sit on the other end of the spectrum, for high-end more expensive gaming.

It now has an ad. A very odd ad but still an ad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,761 ✭✭✭GothPunk

That's a Sony ad if I ever saw one!

    - Most of ad spent on footage unrelated to product whatsoever - Check!
    - Slightly creepy use of crying babies, weird looking models or mutilated body parts - Check!
    - Only 2 seconds devoted to shots of the device and/or gameplay footage - Check!

Still, totally going to get one. Would you believe I still don't have one of the 'smart' phones...

I thought we had left those days behind us with Kevin Butler and 'It Only Does Everything'. Guess not.

As for the phone, SE are rubbish at updating their phones, so tbh, unless this thing is spectacular. I will be going with HTC in future.

KB with a playstation phone and something to do with having a direct line to some of the worlds leaders that be a good ad.

"Hello Egypt, i accept the Job" Kevin Butler - VP of Egypt.

There have been some ads showing up that aren't real but business trying to sell the ads to Sony to use.

Sony Ericsson has finally stopped teasing, winking, and nodding knowingly and has just come clean.

The Xperia Play is most definitely real and it'll be one of the first devices announced at this year's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, February 13th at 6PM GMT. Also that ad it sadly real.

It's not a hardware thing or a software thing, read the article on the ps blog about how hard it is to get the games licences to be sold again.

I'd say most Sony owned games will work and all new games will have the license gotten at the start, but some others will need further licences bought to allow it and that may mean re-buying or it just never working.

I still think I will stay with my iPhone 4 then get a PSP phone due to have over 100 euro of apps on my iPhone that took over 3 years to build up and I am happy with my iPhone even if I have had 4 iPhone 4s to get one that works

Wow no way in hell would I pay the 650euro price tag I have seen for this... Tbh it is not worth near that much...
Though we now have more or less full specifications for Sony Ericsson’s four new Xperia handsets, the company have been conspicuously silent on the issue of price. However, thanks to a Twitter post spotted by the guys over at Xperiablog.net we now have at least an idea of what we can expect the handsets to cost. The tweet revealed the RRP for all four new Xperias on the German market, which we assume will not be too far removed from what we eventually see here in the UK.

The Xperia Neo is set to be the cheapest of the four, with a recommended retail price of €479 (£403). Next up is the Xperia Pro at €499 (£420), followed by the Xperia Arc at €599 (£504). The Xperia Play will be the most expensive at €649 (£546).

Of course, these prices are only the recommended retail prices for Germany, so we can’t be sure the same pricing structure will make it over to the UK. Additionally, we expect all of these handsets to be available on contracts which will subsidise the prices significantly. We’ll let you know when more UK-specific information emerges.

I can get a iPhone a lot cheaper

There asking for there death on this thin before it's even out

For 650 euros you can pick up a iPhone 4 32GB and a 3DS not just a PSP that can only play old PS1 games

If they are looking for 650 euro for this which is basically a NGP with out the phone we are looking at 500 euros for the NGP

That's 200 above what other high end smart phones cost and one that would be more powerful than the play anyway, it won't be that price.

Well I paid 299 for my iPhone 4 32GB and pay 40 euro every 4 Weaks with 150 mins of any network calls 600 txts with 2gb of web and free 02 calls and txts and if I am watching my txts I use Facebook to chat

Also I got a free iPod neno 16 GB for free from apple due to have problems and also free line rental from 02 so and also 4 free cases for my phone so really I paid notting for my phone

The NGP and xperia play can't play the same games? The NGP will be fit to play much more graphical games so if that price is true then NGP probably cost 700 lol..

If that is the price the iPhone will just kill and destroy the xperia play.. I can see them charging 500 anyways.. Even that is a high price for it..

Sony has owned-up to the development of prototypes that fill a "very important position" somewhere in between its own Vaio PC lineup and the Xperia Play byproduct of its Ericsson commingling.

It's meant to be a 9.4-inch Android 3.0 tablet. Details of which have been confirmed by two highly trusted and independent sources. Known by its "S1" codename internally, Sony is busy customizing Matias Duarte's Honeycomb interface to its own specification.

The team is lead by the VAIO organization but will probably launch as a Sony product without VAIO branding, according to one source. Sony's custom-built transitions and UI elements have created a user experience that rivals and at times improves upon the iPad's renowned experience. The tablet itself is 100% focused on Qriocity, Sony's music, games, ebooks, and videos on demand service that's just been launched in Europe. It comes preloaded with Sony PS One games, a Bravia Media Remote, and PlayStation integration and will be PlayStation Suite certified making it a full-blown gaming tablet.

I wonder does this PSP Xperia Play have a user removable battery!

As the 1500mAh batt. wont last long! For running complex PSP style games!

Also having to rebuy rehashed games for it will cost you another 2-300quid!

No thanks, I'll stay with the iPhone or HTC Android phones!

The PS Suite will play Playstation One games on the Xperia Play and is also coming to Tegra 2 android devices, and will use the extra power by including support for PlayStation 2 games.

Sony will be first with a certified tablet using NVIDIA's Tegra 2 and any other tablets that use it and are certified will also be capable of playing PS2 games.
