I have to have one lower wisdom tooth extracted. My dentist mentioned it was very close to a nerve so recommended it being being done by an oral surgeon.
Should I go under sedation or just local injection.?

    Would vhi cover me? and

What will it all cost me?

I think you would have to see the oral surgeon first and see how much it is going to costs. I had a wisdom tooth done under full anesthetic some years ago and at that time vhi paid for most of it. Once you get your quote you could check with VHI then.

I've the same problem, had to put off getting it done for about 18 months as I was out of work and couldn't afford it (never got a medical card).

Would it be worthwhile joining VHI just so they can shoulder some of the cost of the procedure? And what's a ballpark figure for getting it done?

If your covered under VHI your extraction will be free (if the surgeon is fully participating with VHI this is important) all you will pay for is the consultation. A single wisdom tooth extraction privatly would be around 500 euro with sedation. PM me if you need details.

heath insurance will only cover impacted wisdom teeth (coming in sideways) i think

I'm due to get all four teeth extracted next week privately in Clane hospital. The bottom two are impacted and I was told it needs to be done under general anaesthetic. However, I just found out today that VHI First Plan starter doesn't cover private. Great.

I was also told that there are no oral surgeons in the public hospitals anymore; could anyone confirm this for me?

Anyway, I'm to discuss my options with the surgeon tomorrow. I will ask how much it costs in general and let you know. I think if they do it while you're just sedated it can cost a lot less, but it just depends on your particular case whether it can be done that way.

I had all four wisdom teeth extracted under sedation yesterday-
The surgeon was in a VHI approved clinic, and he was VHI approved, so all I had to pay for was the consultation and sedation (€190) in total. And I just have plan A with VHI.
And just for the record, and anybody who's getting it done soon, to throw in my tuppenceworth, I was worrying about nothing!
Have had very little pain since, can eat much more than I thought I would be able to, and have just finished cleaning all the windows :)

My own dentist had me completely wound up about the procedure, telling me all about what a difficult angle the teeth were at, and about the nerve that would leave me paralysed if they touched it, etc.

So met the surgeon just before he took the teeth out, he had me completely chilled as soon as he started talking, put all my worries aside by saying "Now you just let me worry about that, I know what I'm doing!"

He gave me the IV sedation and said "I just want to check something here", but I was so out of it that I didn't realise he was actually taking the teeth out. So when he told me to close my mouth, and I was all done, I didn't believe him - the whole thing seemed to take about 10 seconds.
Didn't hear any horrible noises or feel any pressure at all.
    Ninja dentist!

I know of someone who got her wisdom teeth removed under full anaesthetic in a public hosp a few weeks back, but I think it was done by a general surgeon rather than an oral one.

    Hey Pinkleopard
Any update on this-I am in exact same position with teeth and have been told i need a general because of the nerve-am new customer to health insurance and therefore not covered until the six month period is up and at that they told me that wisdom teeth are a pre-existing condition so will probably not be covered anyway...was quoted €2000 by a south Dub surgeon which seems just crazy and way beyond my means...am very worried :-( if you have any info it would be great, thanks a mill!

The surgeon I went to was pricing the extraction at €600, Clane hospital and GA was the expensive part, coming in at €1,040 (so €1,640 altogether). If you were able to go up north it would definitely be cheaper, but if your teeth happen to be close to the nerve or the nerve is wrapped around the root it would be worthwhile to have a surgeon who is very reputable.

Would you be able to wait for the six months. Or try a general surgeon in a public hospital?

Apparently my insurance covers it if it's done in the dental surgeon's regular practice under sedation and local anaesthetic (or a public hospital), so that's what I'm doing now in a couple of weeks. Is there any way your insurance might cover that, or can the surgery be done that way for you at all?

Thanks for the above info pinkleopard. Unfortunately I don't think the north is an option. There is a slight chance that the insurance may cover it after the six months which would be after Jan so am clinging on to that but to be honest I have kinda faced that I will be paying a fortune for this. I don't know if it is possible to go public with this?!? I was told that I need to go to a hospital because of position of nerve so can't get it out in the dentist....ouch to getting them out and the purse :(

The removal is no more risky to the nerve under local, sedation or general anesthetic. It only depends on your nervousness. An extraction under sedation will be about 500-700 euro, under local its about 300-400.
