Basically I am doing my leaving cert this year and I am considering doing the Actuarial science degree in UCD.

I am just wondering if there are jobs for actuarys outside Dublin or if you would have to live and work in Dublin as I am from mayo

Also, are there any actuarys on here who could maybe tell me a little about what they think of the job.

I couldn't imagine many actuarial jobs outside Dublin.

Could be wrong. You should try searching on a job websites to see what comes up.

    ps it's actuaries.

It's a great job but will you get one here when you graduate?

Go do it but realise its a tough job market nowadays so put the head down and do well .. You don't have to work in Dublin there's plenty of jobs in that regard in the UK you could also go on to doing accounting or a finance position after your degree a where as its hard to do actuary from those courses

Seriously though, where would you ideally like to work? To be honest if you're basing your ideal career choice on where you want to live you're gonna limit yourself a lot in what you can do.

I am torn at the moment between engineering in NUIG and Acturial Finance in UCD.

Ideally I would prefer to work closer to home (Mayo) and I was just wondering if it is possible to get an actuarial job outside of Dublin

This is the Final Destination Survey for the Financial and Actuarial Maths graduation class of 2009 from DCU. You'll see the types of companies they ended up working at. I'm sure a little digging will find you something similar for UCD. A little more research will tell you where these companies have offices.

about 95% of all actuarial jobs in Ireland are in Dublin.

Good news is, there's loads of jobs at the moment - a severe shortage of actuaries.
