    Hi guys,

I am just starting in BJJ, and I was wondering what are the average times in each belt rank?

I am NOT looking for a quick way to get a black belt, or to short-cut anything, I am just curious.

    Thanks guys,

Its usually about 2 years for getting your blue belt and an average of 8 - 10 years for black, If your training correctly that is. Most people never get past blue or purple because of the level of commitment required.

Matt Thornton has a great guideline.

Speaking from my experience,(and mine only) nine years to get to 2 stripes on a blue belt seems reasonable. Sigh

I reckon a decent proportion of people who get to purple will eventually get a black belt.

Each grade takes a long time El Diablo, a long time. It should really should be measured in mat hours as apposed to years as well. In any case you'll have a much happier time forgetting about belts competely and just rolling.

I used to get really bothered about belts, and the fact that it seemed I wasn't progressing as fast as i would have liked. On reflection, the fact that I wasn't promoted as quickly as I would have liked, was entirely fair! :p
My suggestion is, like DOC said, is to forget about it and just enjoy your training. We should all be big and ugly enough to not have to worry about other peoples opinions of our Jiu Jitsu, and think of it more as personal development.

Like Dunk, I'm another of those 2 stripe blue belts that have been training forever and a day. But i don't really worry about it any more. Training is more enjoyable than watching Eastenders, so I keep going.
