I wasn't there due to family circumstances but I normally sell cattle there every year on the october bank holiday.

What were prices like? Were there a lot of Blues??

I was in Mohill last wednesday and prices were back a little bit for Bull calves, but they were still pretty strong for heifers.

Kilfenora yesterday. The 300kg ish (280kg to 320kg), seemed to have more buyer demand than the heavier calves.
Not much interest in calves showing signs of creep feeding.

Long long day in elphin monday!!. had a few spring born calves and had them in at 11 or so and only sold at 10.30 that evening!! Prices ok, believe it was back from previous weeks in other marts. Question is what ye think of keeping stock in yard that long without feed and water! would they have lost weight etc? Would buyers be put off stock they know are in the yard that long?

I did not head until the evening. Not many Blues while I was there, Mainly good quality ch.. prices were back a touch on what I seen at other marts in the last few weeks....

15 In calfs also, LM, SIM, CH and 2 Blues.. Big demand for the LM and SIM, made from 1500 - 2100... Not much demand for the CH, they were selling at roughly 1200-1300..... Quality animals though, mainly 3 year olds 700 + KG

That'I be farmers buying them then. Why buy overfattened cattle that are going to go back once you put them in the shed, not to mention when you go squeeze them. Sure it'd be ages before you'd start to put weight on them.

Bought 2 lim bulls on Saturday 285kgs/ €600(def not creeped;)), thought I bought them ok for how they were going on the day, but if I did the sums I'd say I'd be better off waiting til spring to buy more:rolleyes:

That's ridiculous, they need to get a different auctioneer or have more rings. Your right, that's a long time for cattle, then what if they're heading on a lorry for another few hours, God knows when they'd get fed/watered

Will you hold these for finishing? At what age will you aim for. What price would you expect for these finished.
You won't have much profit from them....

Your not wrong there, prob won't make alot on them. Sad thing is, hey were pretty much the cheapest weanlings there that looked like they'd turn into anything. I deliberately didn't want to buy creep finished weanlings for the reasons mentioned previously.

But thinking about it now, prob be better buy heavier bullocks in the spring, grass is cheaper:rolleyes: I won't be pushing these over the winter, no point. I'm planning for early spring grass and I'I give them plenty of it;)

I agree, that's pulling the piss out of man & beast. It's not right. They need more a more efficient system to cater for the numbers, more rings and auctioneers.

I hear you.... i have bought in a few light bull weanlings in previous years with the plan to finish in 18 Mths....
Not going to bother this year with the price, will prob buy a few in Apr - save on the winter feed cost and work

Most marts around here, including Elphin, have livery facilities for cattle. Most of the dealers use these. ie. have the cattle fed and watered for a day or two before they move them from the mart - especially if they have a long distance to go. Elphin also have a testing service for exporters. The exporter can then buy whatever cattle he likes - export tested or not and a vet will come to the mart to test them and clear them for export before they leave the mart at all.

Its a good service and isn't offered by a lot of marts. That's why Elphin can attract a lot of export buyers and always have done in the past. Usually is a great mart for cattle suitable for export but if your cattle aren't fit for export then I'd be going to one of the other local marts.

I honestly don't know the cost as I've never had to use it - only 12 miles from Elphin. I understand that the service is available to all buyers on request.
