Boat Restoration

    Hi,

I recently bought a small yacht, with the best of intentions of carrying out a full restoration over the winter, but due to work commitments unfortunately I seldom get a chance to work on it. Usual story...

    I am looking for somebody who would be interested in getting involved in the restoration (or who would take it on fully), and I would be willing to pay etc. The main work consists of the following;

    - Below the water line fibreglass repair (damaged by the trailer).
    - Reinforce the cockpit (a bit saggy).
    - Remove and reinstall the skeg.
    - Fibreglass repairs to the deck (star grazing).
    - Remove and reinstall most of the fittings on the decks ensuring each is leak tight.
    - Painting of the decks with non slip.
    - Exchanging all of the halyards, sheets etc.

    At a push;
    - remove the wood work inside the boat, and reinstall as new.
    - rewiring including the mast.

The boat is currently located in Skerries, but I am looking to move it into a shed for the winter, or to a specific location dependent on any offers received.

Any interested parties, or any positive advice welcome.

Hi Bottle, There is a place in Malahide marina that can do all that work for you but it is not cheep and I find with restorations the more you dig the more you find and you end up spending more than the boat is worth.
Maybe when you get a shed for it you will be able to work on her at night and save a lot of money,I am in balrothery but am working on 3 boats at the moment and they take up all my time but if you have any questions I will try and help out if you do take it on yourself.:):)

    Hi Fergal,

thanks for that. 3 Boats, you must be busy / good...

I am aware of the guys in Malahide, and also the costs, and would consider it as a final solution, but at least it would be done right and would give me peace of mind.

I dont suppose you know of anybody in the locality who might be interested in renting out some shed space?

I think there is a guy that works in Skerries life boat station that has a boat storage shed,I can't think of his name now but if you ask down there someone will know him he sometimes has an add on done deal. What size is your boat, there are containers on the way to lusk for rent if it will fit also up at the M1 business park there is a sign for storage sheds.
Most boat storage places charge about €3 per foot per month or €50-€75.

Here is the one on the skerries road.

Theres a place on the west pier in howth that does storage aswell. I think pro rig look after the yard but i dont think they have a shed. You could try build a large tent cover as such out tarpaulin. 2 lads i know were restoring/converting a 70ft trawler/motor cruiser a few years ago and had a massive tent cover over the whole thing and they were able to work rain hail and sun

That's all I have for my builds just a basic cover it is handy to just pop out and do a bit when you feel like it instead of having to spend time driving to the storage unit and back.

    Thanks for the advice.

I currently have the boat in a field / garden and had considered building a scaffolding frame and covering the same with a tarpaulin, but would really prefer to get it into a shed with services, or get somebody else to do the work as I do not have any time to do any work at all.

The boat is a Ruffian 23.

Fergal B, that is one nice looking boat. Very classy. The wife has a problem with me owning a boat, never mind keeping it at the house :D

When you said small yacht I was thinking small:) I think I have seen her on the rush road, great boat. The place in Ballyboughal might be your best bet.
Most of our wives have problems with us owning boats:)

Thats the one alright. It is a great location to keep a boat, but with the dark evenings and irish weather it is not a great location for working on it.

Nice boat! I'm planning something similar for my third build. (Yes, I'm not even half-way through the first, and already planning the second and third :D)

oscarBravo, you are a brave man thinking that far ahead...

I see you are located in my home town. I think if I was back there I would not have the same problems. Living in Dublin, and trying to do this type of work is complicated.

Yeah, I'd hate to be attempting it in the city. As it is I have a fair ol' drive to Charlestown to work on it, but I've nowhere to keep it at my house.

    Hi Bottle,

Myself and my friend who's a qualified carpenter are currently restoring a Mermaid (Timber Clinker) and am also doing some remedial work on another, although they are timber built there is quite a lot of work to be done with epoxy (west systems). I have sailed Ruffians in the past Ballyblue (Tony Dennis) & Red Cloud (Eric Mason) so i would be familiar with the rigging and setup..

I would be keen to take a look at what work needs to be carried out, i can also arrange a work space unfortunately it will be outside but we can arrange a canopy.

If you would like to see some of the work currently being carried out i would be happy to show you we are working in a yard in Ballybougal.

Text me on MOD EDIT - Please do not post your phone number on Boards, contact people via PM

    Regards

    Alan
