Beet, wheat or rape??

Following the news that British Sugar has offered farmers 20% more capacity for growing sugar beet next year, will they switch or stay with beet?

In the context of an excellent year for wheat and oilseed prices, will it be a tough choice?

The thing about oilseed is that it's pretty N hungry, and fertilizer prices are also set to rise sharply (to 340€ a tonne). Its current price is €340 a tonne.

While for wheat, most farmers sold at around €120, but prices are currently €190 - which makes it tempting.;)

Beet is being offered to be bought at €28.50. And it looks to be hard to make much of a return even at this price.:(

    What do you think?

I would think that much of what the british farmers will do is likely to be dictated by the needs of their rotation, it's possible that there may be some switching between beet and rape but I'd be surprised if it's much.

Farmers here and in the UK have less ability to swap between crops than farmers in the states where they often wait till the last minute before deciding whether to go for maize (corn) or soya beans, a quick hunt through agrimoney.com will give you an idea how they react to the market.
