I'll try to keep this short. Currently working in a contract role that ends in a few months and which may get renewed, although we have been told that long term, they want to reduce the number of contractors on our team. So I'd say if it does get renewed, it will be the last time.

Setting this aside, I'm unhappy in my job and I'm almost certain it has caused me to start suffering from stress/anxiety. In a way, it's a handy number, but the team I work in just completely does my head in. So I'm in a situation where I essentially need to leave and should leave and find something else, but I'm resistant to do so.

A friend who also worked on the team but who's contract didn't get renewed said to me "They done me a favour as had I stayed there, I would have been suicidal". While I don't think she would actually have comitted suicide, I think she means the team was just driving her to the end of her teather.

I only really have two options as I see it. Start looking for something else in the city I'm living in now, or move home to my parents place when this contract ends, take some time off and start looking for work in that area. Although the last time I did, I spent several months looking and got no offers at all and barely any interviews. So I doubt the job market is any better now than it was then.

I'm not sure what to do. Part of me likes living where I am, but at the same time I wouldn't mind a bit of a break, although if I'm not working, I couldn't afford to live here, I'd have to move home straight away. I also don't have much in the way of savings which is another reason I'd have to move home.

    What should I do?

Hi OP, sorry to hear about your dilemma. A suggestion I would make is to make a list and write down all or as many pros and cons of staying in the same job and then a seperate list writing down all the pros and cons of leaving the job. Having something written down rather than having multiple clashing thoughts flying through your mind might help give you a clearer insight on what to do next.

It might even be worth putting a rating beside each pro and con (eg 1 = not very important, 2 = important but not essential, 3 = absolutely essential) and sum up each column. Whatever has the highest number may help you make a clearer decision. This is not scientific of course, but might at least give you a pointer as to what to do next.

I just wanted to say that I hope I didn't come off as ungrateful to have a job. I know there are lots of people out there looking for work and I definitely don't want to be unemployed myself. I just want to be at least somewhat happy in whatever job I'm working in.

I think things have become a lot clearer since I posted this yesterday. I was in a bit of confusion about what to do and then yesterday afternoon, something just clicked in my head. My boss said something to me at work, nothing bad or anything, just enquired about something. Then straight away it just dawned on me, I said to myself "Why am I still working here when I'm so fed up of it all? Why am I not looking for something else?". So as soon as I got out of work I came home and have started to apply for other jobs. I'm looking for work here and also in my home region, however I have a slight preference at this time for work in my home area.

    Thanks for the reply ongarboy.
