Thought we should have a thread for it seeing as the game is on before the International Rules on Saturday.
Anyone know where to find the Irish squad for the games? I presume they're still using counties not in Liam McCarthy.

Also the camogie and Under 21 internationals are being held in my local club Ratoath on Saturday afternoon if anyone wants to head down. It's free!

It's usually a great game to watch. The shinty sticks are great to see.

    Will this be on TV?

Are there many 'big' players on it this year? Wouldn't know a lot about it myself but I heard Tommy Walsh was the only all-star (or was it Liam McCarthy player?) on it last time round.

Tommy Walsh was captain of this last year, i think Shane Dooley and Joe Bergin were involved as well so there's a small number from counties in the McCarthy cup anyway.

edit - just check TV listings, International Rules starts at 4.30 on TG4, game isn't till 7, so I presume its the shinty they are showing

Ireland won the U21 game by 3-6 to 1-3. Scotland were ahead by 1-0 to 0-2 at half time but Ireland got three early goals in the second half to end it as a contest.

I thought the under 21 might be on, thought it was amusing that TG4 would deem Irish Dancing not suitable for someone on an Irish ISP

I presume the outside posts arent used in this game?

No they are not. The standard of this is very poor I think. Its quite impressive to see the scots knock a ball over 40 metres off the ground but if Tipperary played these they would absolutely demolish them. I don't know much about shinty so its possible that they haven't sent their best players either but the basic skills are lacking in the Irish team anyway.

close enough game Scots 2-16 Irl 2-15 some skill with those hockey sticks!

the shinty stick is great for getting under the ball. as one of the commentators said, they're pucking it like golfers. it's a great advantage over the hurlers.

I'm not sure what you expect, the skills most prevelent in this hybrid version are increasingly non-existent in Gaelic Hurling itself.

I thought it was entertaining enough myself. Patrick Horgan got some nice scores, as did one of our midfielders (Royle from Kerry maybe?).

you can see the that game of shinty has possibly bee influenced by field hockey in the mainland Britain rather hurling seems to be untouched from any other modern sport.

A great interesting game to watch, Shinty is the true form of Ancient Hurling and was known as Winter or Ground Hurling before the GAA standardised the sport to modern standards. Ancient games would be played as running pitch battles over fields and up and down mountains and something similar still exists today in an annual game played in the Isle of Man on St. Stephens day. A game of cammanacht should be organised in some big arena like a Horse racing course and let men be men without their pansy helmets.

Can someone explain the scoring system? Scotland were getting 2 points for putting it over the bar, seems like an unfair advantage. Although I think sometimes they were only awarded 1 point.

Entertaining game to watch, I think there is another game I think in a week or two?

If a free or 65 is taken from the ground and goes over, it's worth 2 points. Basically all the Shinty frees are taken from the ground so any free or 65 they score is worth 2 points. Most of Ireland's frees were jab lifts so they were only 1 point. Although Ireland did get a free off the ground in the second half.
All scores from open play are one point.

The next test is on November 13th but it's in Inverness. Don't know if it'll be on TG4 but it's usually on BBC Alba.

I was there expecting to be bored to death....... far from it,those scots ran rings around us and were way more skillful and fully deserved their victory. i found it a very entertaining game. i could not get over the accuracy and length of the pucks the scots could achieve with those weapons!:D

So it's somehow 'unmanly' to wish to avoid suffering a potentially fatal head injury?
Your idea of 'manliness' obviously doesn't include basic intelligence.

All those dead bodies piling up because of dangerous Hurling, lets just ban it altogether eh? I wonder how the ancients managed without Helmets or cotton wool?

It is not so much to avoid a fatal head injury but rather a fatal lawsuit that Helmets were brought in, sport for sport Hurling is no more dangerous than soccer, gaelic football or Rugby. Some players used Helmets and they are common underage so it was easy for the GAA to bow to their insurers and enforce this madness to the detriment of the game, same thing with Pitch invasions.

How come they were able to allow the shinty players to play without helmets, although one or two had hockey helmets of their own choosing. The GAA knew if they tried enforcing such stupidity the Shinty boys would probably walk. Imagine ordering Wayne Rooney into a knights armor incase he'd get fouled - stupidity and all it shows is how much the GAA only cares about one thing money and profit.

People die playing soccer regularly worldwide, Gaelic Football has had several tragic deaths and Rugby similarly. No matter what you do in life there is some built in risk associated with it.

As for your "intelligence" comment I have reported you and hope are infracted for such an insulting thing.

Must say I found the hurling/shinty game very entertaining, hope the 2nd test is televised.

Much better than international rules as well.

Why don't Ireland field a full strength team? I know players have club commitments this time of year so some won't be available, but it's far from the best 15 that Ireland could put out.

Perhaps it's to even it up? I recall us absolutely annihilating them a couple of years back in a game.

Was enjoyable enough to watch though. As someone posted above, it's like they're playing golf with the swing and distance they can get.

I presume its to keep it competitive. Does anyone have insight into the standard of the Shinty panel? I would like to see the strongest possible teams fielded. On the other hand its interesting to get to see players from "weaker" hurling counties.

Paul Dermody, the goalkeeper was great....brought off some fantastic saves. Hurls in goal for Kildare, used to play for a club in Kilkenny, Graigue- Ballycallan. As a kilkenny man, was disappointed with Tommy Walsh, never really got into the game for such a class hurler.

The likelihood of suffering a serious eye injury playing hurling is far greater than any of the other sports you mentioned which is one reason they are good for the game. My own grandfather had to wear glasses for most of his life as a result of such an injury.

Cut the macho crap and stop lamenting for times gone by when men were real men. There is no great conspiracy from the GAA here, its for the safety of all players

God forbid anymore than 2 or 3 big names might play... Espeically under 21, i find it hard to believe youngfellas wouldnt go for the craic, if not the gear! Half the kerry u21 team there. Meyler already practicing for next year?

I'm not 100% per cent sure but i think theres some agreement that the team wont be full of the bigger inter county stars.
Last time out Tommy Walsh was the only kilkenny player.

I suppose some of the players from the stronger counties didnt make themselves available due to club championships that are still going on.

The U21 Hurling/Shinty panel is as follows:

    1. Eoin Reilly -Laois (Goalkeeper)
    2. Michael Armstrong -Antrim
    3. John Coyne - Roscommon
    4. David English - Carlow
    5. John Gilligan - Westmeath

    8. Jason Leahy - Kerry
    9. Alan McGrath - Westmeath
    10. Brian Murphy - Kerry
    11. Killian Murphy -Westmeath
    12. Shane Nolan -Kerry
    13. Darragh O'Connell - Kerry (Captain)
    14. Barry O'Mara -Westmeath
