ESB - 300e deposit or direct debit?

We need to sort out ESB in our flat as the landlord is putting it in our name. We can either pay a €300 deposit (which I think allows us to pay bills in the Post Office?) or set up DD.

What is generally a better choice? I read something about the 300 only showing up in your account after 16 months, which would be no good if we're leaving in 8

personally i would go with the direct debit. that way, you know its going to be paid on time.

Direct debit as long as you know that whoever sets it up will always have cash in the account and can rely on the others to pay up in time.

Only problem that might arise is on the last day of tenancy you ring ESB and get the final bill at which point some of the housemates might be away home for the summer and it might be difficult to get the last payment from them so keep that in mind.

You get entered into a competition you'll probably never win if you use DD as well/

You should consider moving to airtricity, they dont charge you any deposit and you can set up a DD or just pay your bill in the post office!

Aren't they cheaper too? Would we have to talk to the landlord about it?

They are cheaper! We've now switched both our gas and electricity to them as there's more savings. We didn't have to ask our landlord about switch. I think it's up to you if you want to switch not the landlord, you are the one paying the bills after all! They can always go back to ESB after you have left aswell as there is not set number of months you have to stay with airtricity.

The ESB is currently still in the landlords name but I was sent letters in the post about switching (have to in 10 days). The letters were in my name, can my flatmate still register with Airtricity and pay from his account?
