Motor Problem

Once more I find myself seeking assistance from the collective brain of the Airsoft community. :D

I purchased a high speed motor from a well known Irish retailer. Out of the gearbox this motor runs just fine, but it seems to ‘lock up’ after a few triggers pulls when it’s fitted to the gun.

To confuse the matter further, if I replace the new motor with another high speed motor this ‘locking up’ doesn’t happen.

I realise the obvious answer might be the motor, but as it runs perfect out of the gearbox, I feel there might be another answer.

The gearbox is a VFC so it should be quite capable of taking the extra humph the faster motor provides.

Is the motor height screw adjusted properly and might sound stupid but is it in the grip the right way ie is it turning the right direction?:)

Yep, the motor would be seated fully into the gearbox.

As for your other question. I put the new motor in, in the same direction as the old one.

With the red contact of the new motor in the position as the red contact was in the old motor.

    My turn for a silly question;

Do motors turn in different directions - do some turn clockwise and others turn anti clockwise

Not that I know of, I just asked because some motors dont have coloured terminals and it's not immediately obvious which way it should go in.

I'll get maybe 3/4 semi shots or a short burst before it will stop. Then when I pull the trigger all I get is 'click - click'. Similar to the sound of a gearbox locking up.

But as I've said, this doesn't happen with the other high speed motor or the stock motor....:(

Had a similar problem when a ultra high speed motor that was fitted to a G&G raider
Because the motor turns a lot faster then standard it will also draw a greater amount of power from the battery and the battery in question could not provide the power required through the existing wires
Had to rewire the gearbox with Silver Cord low resistence wire as the wires within the raider are a very small cross section and at the ampage required to turn the motor under load through the existing wires they were posing a problem in the circuit

PS if you connect the wires the wrong way around at the motor the gear box will not move because the anti-reversal latch will stop it

    HI Jonny
it's not a KWA motor is it? I had the same issue with one of em...

Are you sure the motor is brand spanking new? Assuming it is - some guys bed the brushes in using a 3V battery and running it for a few hours. Helps em runn better/smoother and can prolong the life considerably (apparently).

I've had mint looking motors which seemed perfect but when used under a "load", hadnt the torque to turn the gearbox after a shot or two.

Not much help but might be food for thought...

Let us know how you get on. What make is the motor btw? Is the vfc gearbox stock or modified?

    Lads,

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

DeBurca > I managed to sweet talk ;) a friendly retailer into using some silver core low resistance wiring when I got it rewired from front to back.

Defenderdude> It’s an Element Max Speed motor with a red body, if that helps. ( I know G&P M120’s are a better motor, but I couldn’t wait for the Postie).

The gearbox is stock, but I've been using a high speed motor in it for a quite some time without any problems.

I’ve taking the damm thing out, and while looking at it have discovered the pinion gear is showing a far bit of wear and tear for the short time I got

As Blay said did you reset the motor height which should be done any time that you change from one motor to another as no two motors are exactly the same espicaly between different brands
Excessive wear is often a sign that the motor height is set to deep and with no clearence it can cause premature wear in the motor pinion gear

    Yep!

I always unscrew the screw at the base of the pistol grip until its on it's last thread then screw it back up until the correct noise is heard.

This would get me the few semi shots or a short burst before the lock up.

I though the screw might somehow be working its way loose, so I tried it again with a little thread lock and the same thing happened again :(

Lock-ups are caused by the inability of the battery to supply power to allow the motor to turn against the load of the gearbox
Can I ask what make and battery type you are using

Yes I know that it looks like the motor is at fault, but there is still a small chance that it may not be

    I've tried two, an ASG 9.6v 2000mah & an Intelect 9.6v 2000mah.

I guess its your motor as both of those batteries should be well up to the job

I agree - sounds like a iffy motor to me. Never used that particular one myself but element stuff is usually ok.

ive been told its an easy fix -strip the connector off the wire , remove the allen bolt on the motor and place the stripped wire's under then tighten the allen bolt down on top of the wires ,good to go again ,
havent tried this myself but been advised by a tech it works save's a few quid on a new motor

    Well lads,

Back to the retailer, who tried everything to get the damm thing to work and couldn't. :(

Turns out, the motor is maybe 2/3 mm longer than others and wouldn't properly in the fancy pistol grip I have on my gun.

So now I've gotta drop the bling to up the speed... Airsoft is indeed a cruel mistress............
