    Hi,

I was thinking of buying a new apple MacBook and just wondering a couple of things:

    - are they definitely worth the extra cost than a normal dell or hp laptop?
    - friends of mine are going to new York nxt wk and I was thinking of getting them to buy it for me over there. I'm worried that it mightn't work over here cause of different power sources, differencesbetween u.s. And Europe models. Is there any truth in this or should I just go ahead? Thks

    First...

Bought mine in Philadelphia, and its fine, I just changed the plug on the end of the charger. As far as I remember the mac charger is a variable charger and changes the voltage. So 3 years on an mine is fine and dandy.

    Is it worth it?

I think so, I been through 2 laptops in the time of my one mac.

Upgrading is very easy and have only recently upgraded ram and HD

Same sortware is availble for the mac as pc and I find the Mac easier to use and less tends to go wrong with it.

The narrower a man’s mind, the broader his statements.

IMHO no. I refuse to pay a premium and not have say a blu-ray player or hdmi port as standard. They pro line are nice machines to look at and handle, but I really don't think that's enough justification for the cost. I've had worse reliability problems with my own Macs than Dell - although my next machine will probably be a Sony. Positives for the mac is you'll have less ****e clogging up your machine, but that shouldn't be an issue if you use common sense on a windows machine either.

Have a Macbook for over 3 years now. As good as the day I bought it. Could never ever say that about any windows machine I owned. Add to that the fact you have bootcamp if you need it and I think it's worth it.

I've owned both Mac and PC and there is no doubt that mac is better.

Mac is cleaner, has great software and without going into too much detail kicks windows ass.

The big reason is that Bill Gates and Steve Jobs took two separate paths in the computing world. Gates made the software (windows) and let different manufactures take care of the hardware. This is why windows is bigger, Windows has millions more computers out there than Mac. Which means that everybody is competing for sales (therefore are generally cheaper)

Jobs made sure that his software AND hardware were above industry standard. Today this choice shows because when you purchase a mac it's plain and simple. There's no thousands of brands fighting for market share, there's simply Apple.
This factor, along with many others (visit http://apple.com) is why Apple Mac has the upper hand on Dell or HP.

So yes, spend that little bit extra because it will be worth it.

    *******

Oh and Windows runs on Mac anyways.

    IMO, no.
I have worked on a Macbook for the past year and still prefer Windows.
Macs are nice, no doubt but not a patch on Windows.
If you could find a laptop with a MacBook sized trackpad & multitouch... Ah but one can dream...
Oh and Windows runs on Mac anyways.
And the other way if you have the right hardware :D

Specs vs specs you will find you get less for your money if you buy Apple hardware. If money is not issue then decide on merits what you will use your laptop for.
I use both so IMHO for video editing , photo editing and Itunes Mac is better
For MSOffice, professional network software , games Windows is better

It all depends what you will use it most for.

Nearly worth the money for that reason alone, most of my laptops only lasted me a year before crapping themselves in one way or another, apple seems to really build good stuff

in 2005 i bought two machines.

    1. 13inch macbook
    2. custom built pc running xp 4 gigs of ram, dual core the lot.

today in 2010, the macbook will still open up photoshop with 40-50meg raw photographs, the pc however will not or at least not without crying its eyes out.

the tl;dr version, my five year old macbook is still going strong where as my pc has long passed it.
