    HI
i have gas fired central heating and this week when i went to turn on the heat for the first time of the year, only one radiator worked - the one immediately above the boiler upstairs. Even the pipes into tall the other rads seem to be cold. we replaced the pump in the bolier two years ago. any advice would be much appreciated

    Hi

Since it's the first time of the year you have turned it on, check the water pressure in the system (should be around 1 bar)...Also check that the pump is spinning by removing the screw (sometimes its a black nut) in the centre of the face of the pump and inserting a screwdriver......If there both fine post back.

definately sounds like one of above ^^^

more than likely the pump, even tho it was replaced 2 years ago if something with a motor in it isn't used for months and months it can seize up needs a helping hand to get started again.

    agree with above posters
turn heating on and tap metal part of pump lightly with hammer
    might free up pump
    cheers

What if it's tank fed or a semi sealed system:confused:.

if the boiler has a internal pump then it's illegal to take a cover of a gas boiler and work on it and if it's LPG then it's silly to take the cover off it and work on it if you don't know what your doing.

OP if it were the pump that was stuck i would expect the boiler to over heat and lock out or for the boiler to generate a loud noise followed by a lot of banging, your pump could still be the problem but as you have some movement i would be suspect a circulation issue but i could be wrong:eek:, i would advise you to have it serviced/checked by a RGII and repeat every year before the heating season to confirm every things working.

definetly aggree; if the boiler is firing up (gas valve opening etc) it is unlikeliy to be a pump issue.
However it may still be a circulation issue.
Would suggest checking that the motorized heating zone valve may be sticking.
The radiator above the boiler may be heating due to gravity.

If you have a separate time and temp control for the cylinder and if the hotwater circuit to the cylinder is getting hot then the pump is fine.
