I had an accident the other day and accepted it was my fault so other guy is claiming off my insurance as am i. His damage wasn't too bad but mine was.. thing is i had defaulted payment the last 2 months by not having enough money in my bank account to cover the DD.. i did pay the defauted months and the current month by laser on the day an hour after the accident, will they still payout?
They hadn't mentioned this fact to me when i rang them, all they did was ask a few questions about the accident and suggested a garage where i could bring my car to be repaired.. i went to the garage and got a courtsey car for a week, i got another call saying they were sending an inspector out to the garage to check it out and assess the quote.
Has anyone any experience with this? Do ye think they will payout???

    Very fortuitous given the circumstances

It depends on how they look at it. If someone in the insurance company looks at your account and sees that the payments are up to date then you'll be fine. If however they dig a little closer then they might see that you were behind at the tone and claim no cover is valid. On the balance of things I think you'll be fine. Even the fact that you were behind at the tone is more of a credit issue than a non insurance issue.

my fingers are crossed, someone did say to me that you get 30days to pay each installment before that month is defaulted i hope this is true!

Giddy up high horse - I wouldn't blame them if they didn't.

I can't see a problem unless they cancelled the policy for non payment you're covered.

If you have missed two dd payments beware if you miss a third they probably will ask for the full remaining balance to be paid.

no the policy wasn't cancelled and they accepted payment, i won't be missing another thats for sure.

Insurers have had to formally cancel your policy for them to try and repudiate your claim. Money oustanding is a totally different matter to cover being in place.

Now time for the high horse. If you couldn't or wouldn't pay the premium, you should have parked the car up. If the policy was being processed for cancellation, the person you hit would have a lengthy delay in getting compensation from the MIB

I missed a DD payment once with Quinn, I rang and said I could have the money in my account by the next week, he said it was ok and they usually allow up to two weeks for it to be paid.

As other posters have already said, "giddy up high horse", if you had not had a bump, would you have continued to "miss" your monthly payments?" you're an uninsured driver who had a crash and you might just get away with it. Cop on, we're all finding it tough at the moment to pay bills etc but missing 3 months on your car insurance is not really acceptable is it?

Trust me, this has been a shock to me, a kick up the arse, that i needed.. i won't be missing any more DDs for my insurance..
So do ye all think it will be ok considering they havent mentioned anything about cancelling the policy and have sent an inspector out and all?

Only they can answer this, everyone here is either guessing or just taking the opportunity to judge you :).

You might want to give them a call.

i with quinn too, so looks like it should be grand as i paid this months within the 2 weeks from when it was due, just worried if they decide to cancell cos i defaulted the previous 2 months, although they did accept payment for them, so fingers are crossed!

Different insurance companies will have different policies

Probably best to give them a call.
If you don't want to identify yourself, just call you ask as a general question

Personally, I would think you are insured as they haven't formally cancelled the policy.
It's the small print somewhere, your insurance booklet will have the info too

But do reply back and let us know how you got on

Not everybody has loads of money in the bank all the time, guy was obviously just caught short when the DD hit.

So go complain to the MIBI about the delays instead of looking down on others from atop your high horse.

What a stupid remark. One of the main reasons the MIBI exists is because there are uninsured drivers on our roads. If everyone paid their insurance premiums and behaved responsibly there'd be no call for the MIBI.

What does the reason it exists have to do with someone complaining about how long it takes them to pay out?

    Twice?

Actually, three times if you read the original post the way I read it.

We need clarification here, was the first missed DD cleared before the 2nd missed DD happened and was the second missed DD cleared before the 3rd happened? my reading of this is that OP had to pay 3 months on their Laser card the day of the accident to validate their insurance, if this is the case, it's a serious loophole which needs to be closed pronto.

Only your insurance company can answer your question OP. Just check your policy in detail and ring them to ask.

So, Over9000dvd, did you call your insurance company today? I'd be interested to hear what they say.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,688 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

The insurers might just be proceeding with the admin of the claim to cover their 3rd party obligation (They must cover all 3rd party claims once cover was given & not formally cancelled). The OP could find that once the insurer works out the various costs involved and settles the 3rd party portion, they may then start to turn the screw and perhaps even attempt to recover all costs from the OP. Foolish move being on the road and not paying insurance.

Cop yourself on. The lad missed a couple of payments. If you can't afford something in this life what gives you the right to think you are entitled to have it. Any one of us can miss a DD for whatever technical reason but it should be rectified ASAP. Missing 2 and heading for a 3rd is taking the piss.

Ignorant comment given the seriousness of the matter

A couple of things here. Firstly, the policy has to be formally cancelled by registered letter, no matter how much was owed on it.

Secondly, the OP was able to clear 3 months arrears by Laser Card within an hour of the incident. Funds must be in the account for a Laser Card to clear, so it would appear he deliberately defaulted on his direct debit. Seems that way to me anyway

they paid out just under 4k.. i was ****ting myself for a week.. and its not that i forgot or just didn't pay the premium.. i rang multiple times to change the account which the direct debit was coming from, their systems was always down.. i just kinda left it and left it from then..but now it all sorted and i will be paying it all on time
