After about three years of storage I am returning home and will bring my car out of storage. it's a 01 almera. So I come home get it looked at by mechanic, get insurance and tax but can I drive around for a bit without the nct. I really don't remember how the whole thing works. Is there a sticker or something a guard would look for if i was randomly stopped or do I apply and then have some lea-way to drive around. Or do I just have to book the NCT and then wait until the day to drive it there. Any help would be great. Thanks

Just book in for NCT and you have the appointment slip, then you should be ok to drive.

Legally you are not allowed to drive it until car has it's NCT.
You can drive it to the test centre on the day you booked test, and you can drive it anywhere you want further that day, if car fails it's test.

In reality you might get away with driving it already, if you just keep your appointment letter with you to show in case you get pulled over.

    THanks,

see if I can squeeze some more knowledge out of ye! Any idea what is the kind of waiting time these days, 1month?

That depends on the centre you book for the test - it varies greatly.

I rang on a Mon, none for ages. Rang on Tue, none again. Rang on Wed and got one for that Sun. Luckily I'm in Dublin so had a wide selection of centres.

Ring the NCT booking number after 8am and you'll get an appointment if you're flexible.

I doubt you'll get much leeway from a Gard who will not have anyway of checking that your car has been in storage for 3 years. To the system, the NCT will be out of date a long time

I put one of our cars back on the road. Got it taxed and insured but NCT wait was a month and a half.

Got stopped twice during that time at checkpoints and they were fine with me showing the e-mail i got from NCTS for the appointment.

If you or somebody else takes your car to one of the larger NCT centres 1st thing any morning and tell them you'll wait for a "no show" you will probably get it tested, bring food and reading material.
