weird oil pressure problem

I fitted an oil pressure gauge a while back. I had to use a T piece as there was only one connection point on my oil filter housing (where factory oil pressure switch goes) everything was grand for a while.. The other day had a long drive on the motor way and after about an hours driving the oil pressure buzzer sounded and light started flashing.. gauge was also at bottom mark.. so i pulled in switched off the car for a few mins then checked oil level.. it was perfect. . started the car and gauge went back up drove on for another bit and the same thing happened again so i changed back a gear and noticed the pressure built back up a little bit.. now i thought that the oil was so hot and tinned out that it was getting it hard to put pressure on the gauge... hasn't happened since but then again i have not used the car on such a long drive.. but now i notice when i push the accelerator to the floor the oil pressure drops to noting on the gauge but no buzzing or oil light flashing...
i have noticed a small bit of oil around the egr valve.. i took it off and cleaned it out as much as i could (it was not bad anyway) put it back on and after a few days noticed a small bit of oil on it again..
Would this cause the drop in oil pressure?? or is likely the T piece i fitted..
Car is coming up on an oil change in the next 3000 miles..

    any one got any ideas??
car is a vag 150bhp pd engine

    thanks
    Sean

What mileage on the engine? Has it been serviced properly?

There would be any chance of anything blocking your t-piece and fooling both the gauge and the warning light into thinking that there is a problem? Would you put it back the way it was and try and replicate the condition.

Failing that, it sounds like it could be a problem with the oil pressure pump or the pressure relief valve sticking intermitently. Do you notice any change in the tone of the engine when the "oil pressure drops"?

How long did it work ok for, after you put in the new gauge? I dont think its anything to do with the EGR.

Don't wait for it to blow up!! get it checked out, the pumps can give problems
Do an oil pressure test and if if fails change the oil pump .if you are driving around with low oil pressure the you might as well have metal filings in the engine. number one rule is to catch a problem early.

80k on the engine. serviced every 6-7k since i got it at 50k had full seat service history up to that..
im going to remove the T piece and see if there is any dirt or anything in it.. engine sounds the same as always.. i only noticed the hand dropping lately but the gauge has been fitted about two months.. i had a problem when i first fitted it with nothing showing on the gauge and the buzzer sounding but that was my own fault as i did not tighten in the factory sensor tight enough and there was a small weep of oil.. i have a new gauge sensor got so i will try fit that and see dose it change anything

    A few years ago I had a similar problem on a 01 mk4 Golf.

Did a pressure test and it was grand but the light would still come on. Because of the dodgy sumps in them I had no peace and would continually have to stop and check the sump for damage.

Changed the oil pressure switch and it didn't work but when I cut the loom back as far as I could and replaced the wires the problem went away.
