So someone's been in my Gmail

Got a warning on my Gmail today that someone had accessed my account via a UK IP address two days ago.

    No spam sent out.

    Do I have a stalker?

Anything I can do with the IP address to clue me in on what's going on or should I just wait until they start sending me letters written in their own blood?

It was just a spot test of your security, usually you just reply with your bank account details and the job's oxo.

Holy ****, you realise that now consequences will never be the same!?

Any chance you use the same password for your gmail as you do for boards??

    No real reason....just curious :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,070 ✭✭✭✭My name is URL

Odd that they'd send an email out because a computer in another country logged into your account. I've logged into Google loads of times from abroad and haven't got an email. Are you sure it didn't say that someone attempted to log into your account? Could have been the Internets equivalent of a wrong number, has happened me a few times on different sites, where someone has a similar user-name and misspelled it along with submitting their own password

Ok, I emailed 'Info@theinternet.com' with all my card and account details.

    Thanks for that fix.

go into your gmail settings and look through the options till you see forwarding and pop/impa settings.

check if there is an email address entered into the forwarding email box that isn't one you know or want.

    had that happen to me.

(this goes for everyone, have a check in your settings)

It's not an email, it's a warning from the Account Activity section on your Gmail. I've been in the one location all week so it spotted one lone access from the UK, then saw that I was still only accessing my account from the one location and flagged it as suspicious.

Nope, they definitely got in. It only flags IP addresses that accessed the account as far as I know.

Didn't think to check that but luckily nothing added.

Did you click on the link in the email?

If so then your fecked, it's a phishing email.

    Possibly. Why?

Gene Simmons' sites/e-mail have been the subject of huge DoS attacks due to his opinions on music sharing this week

If you are Gene Simmons I don't think you can use the internet anymore! Sorry dude!

Tracing an IP address is actually pretty straightforward, and even though it's not always possible to track down a specific individual, you can get enough information to take action and file a complaint. For example, if there was some guy claiming to be Chuck Norris, and tried to get personal information from your Gmail account, you could view his IP address, and then track him. Here's how:
Find the IP number you wish to check. The format of an IP address is numeric, written as four numbers separated by periods. Each number can be zero to 255.Use ping or tracert in the command prompt to find IP address'.

1: To find the IP of an e-mail sent to you, investigate the message's "headers" by using your e-mail program's "details" or "properties" function. For example, in Outlook Express, select "Properties" from the "File" Menu, or just press ALT+Enter. Next, select the "Details" tab. In Yahoo, click "Full headers" on the upper right hand corner while you see the message. In Hotmail, go to "Mail Display Settings" and set "Message Headers" to "Full" or "Advanced". See this website for more information on viewing headers.
2: Go to a website that will allow you to look up IP address information. (You can just Google 'trace ip address') See External Links below. Type the IP number in the input box and submit.
3: Understand that in many situations you will learn a few things about the IP address:
    • Which internet service provider (ISP) the user is using. In some cases this may be the user's company (e.g. Ford.com). In other cases it may be just one of the large ISPs such as ATT or Comcast.
    • The approximate physical location of the user (e.g. Palo Alto, California.)
4: Recognize that usually you will not learn the actual name of the person doing at that IP address (e.g. Joe Smith). ISPs will typically only release such information under a court order.

Another way--if you are using a Windows computer--to find out some information about someone is to go to Command Prompt (if you do not know how to do that, go to the Start menu, Run, and type "cmd" and press OK) and type in tracert <IP address>.

By the way, Windows Live Hotmail is more secure.
I'd also recommend using Mozilla Firefox rather than Windows Internet Explorer.
    Explorer is sh!te.

check the last account activity details. Check the UK IP that had accessed your account.
Look it up, see what the ISP is. Maybe you logged onto your account from a network connection that terminated in the UK.

For example, maybe you used your phone´s wifi in an Irish office of a UK company. Many networks are configured with a transparent web proxy in another country over a vpn. It would appear therefore that you had accessed your email from another country.

There are tons of possible explanations other than "my accts been hacked", although that is a possibility of course.
In fact afair years ago a couple of the Irish ISPs actually gave out IPs from the UK to their Irish customers.

Unfortunately I haven't been anywhere else except this house for the past week. Haven't accessed my email on my phone. Haven't used an internet cafe.

Checked the IP address and it looks like it belongs to daveproxy.co.uk

    Hmmmm......

I've no idea. But so the techies tell me. Much harder to hack in to apparently.

    'daveproxy.co.uk'?

Turns out to be one of those 'proxies that let you anonymously surf the internet'.
F*ckers. Those sites pretend it's all about your own security but they just provide a hiding place for pervs and hackers..

Since the majority of 'hacking' accounts is just people finding out someone's password surreptitiously I don't see how what email a person is using.

'DaveProxy - Your Free Web Proxy / UK Based Proxy Server

If you require a UK proxy server that lets you anonymously surf the web, DaveProxy is one of the most stable of UK proxies on the net. If you're blocked from top sites like facebook, Spotify, Twitter, youtube, bebo, myspace, ebay, and other sites, then you can use our UK based free proxy server to access them.

DaveProxy provides an anonymous free public proxy service. We're British with our server based within the UK so you can access UK only content and helps you bypass any geoip restrictions.

Before using DaveProxy please refer to our disclaimer .'

If that's not dodgy I don't know what is.

That means that for sure it is no automated tool (it is a person doing it manually), and is certainly unauthorized and the logical "no worries" explanations are not applicable.
I´d be doing a full scan for trojans and changing passwords on everything important.
Also notable is that the person who accessed your account could be anywhere using that proxy site. They could even been IN your house :pac: and they would appear to be in the UK.

AH answer: Presumably you spent the last week cooped up in your house downloading from dodgy porn sites and a trojan snuck in! :pac:

Well I guess they're saying it's harder for them to acquire your password. It's just what I was told. What anyone uses is up to them.

I'd scan your computer too. I know it sounds a bit cliché or far-fetched but unless you've an easily guessed password the only way they could have gotten your password was through a RAT or keylogger.
