Torture In Papua

Indonesia has admitted that the men seen torturing Papuan villagers in a video uploaded on the internet earlier this week are members of the military.
The minister for security said the soldiers' actions were excessive and unprofessional. He added that the soldiers would be punished.
    An investigation is continuing.
The graphic video has caused international outrage and raised concerns about the US's recent decision to renew ties with Indonesia's army.

The grainy and badly-shot footage, uploaded on the website of Hong Kong-based Asian Human Rights Commission, shows two men dressed in military uniforms, kicking and abusing indigenous Papuan villagers.
The men are seen interrogating the villagers, and accusing them of having links to rebel groups and separatists.
The second part of the video shows a Papuan man tied up on the ground, being tortured by a group of unidentifiable men.
A man holds a knife to the victim's face and neck as he is repeatedly kicked and questioned.
    'Grave abuses'

The video momentarily shows his genitals being scorched with a burning stick.

The rest of the footage is edited out because, according to a statement on the website, the images are too disturbing.

Evidently the habits learnt in East Timor and against Indonesian dissidents haven't been abandoned. Given the nature of the area, footage and even still footage is rare, however such incidents are by all accounts not.

I'm talking about FACTS, not rumours by vested interest groups.

Is that busman geezer over there stirring it? or is he still in ET.

    .

What "vested interest" do Amnesty and HRW have in Papua?

Saw the Video a few days ago, very disturbing especially considering the fact that journalists are banned from going. Really sad thing is this is going on but more people are bothered with cats getting put in bins or the Kangaroo in the nightclub

The Indonesians obviously didn't learn their lesson when INTERFET turned up in East Timor.

It's a shame such incidents don't recieve proper attention or get dealt with properly.

A cyber attack was launched on a human rights charity after it reported a video of Indonesian soldiers apparently torturing two tribesmen.
Survival International, which campaigns for indigenous tribes, said it was attacked at 5pm on Wednesday when its website was accessed by thousands of computers worldwide.
The initial onslaught was followed by a second "denial-of-service" attack preventing anyone from accessing the site and forcing it offline.
Officials at the charity suspect the cyber attack was linked to a video posted on its website last week featuring the alleged torture of West Papuan tribesmen by Indonesian soldiers.

Theres something surreal about the use of 21st century methods to try and prevent news of such a crude type of brutality....

Gratuitous cruelty should not be tolerated in any society. Its really sad that a thread on such a serious topic as human torture should be used as an opportunity to defend, or at least denigrate, maltreatment of animals. Why? What possible link had it to the topic? Do you consider it OK for an animal to be dumped in a bin, or terrorised at a party?

I agree, this item should have got prominent media coverage. It appears that we are becoming desensitized to reports of torture. That bodes il for the future of real democracy.

Fully agree, terrorists killing hundreds in Pakistan hardly merits a headline.

When certain states try to clamp down on them, the bleeding heart brigade rise up and condemn them.

Bodes ill indeed ,as these terrorists, and their fellow travellers are well versed in the use of the various outlets and mechanisms to promote their cause under the guise of 'concerned citizens'

    Be careful out there.

    What reactionary shíte.

Simple question. One word answer, yes or no. Is the behaviour of the Indonesian military in Papau acceptible?

This isn't about drones dropping bombs in Pakistan, its about a state with previous on the torture and dissaperances score doing it all over again.
