This might sound obvious, but have you re-tuned them?

Also - depending on your location rabbit ears may not be sufficient to pick up a terrestrial signal.

If the menu button works on the universal remote, then you should be able to tune it!

I had a similar problem with a nice big 2nd hand TV I got from a friend that also didn't have a remote. Once you enter the right code into the universal remote for the TV when you press menu typically there should be an option to tune either manual or automatic. The only caution is there's probably several codes for your brand of TV and some may work for some functions, so you may need to get the code that's best and works for the menu.

When you buy a universal remote it usually comes with a book and for each TV manufacturer there are several different codes that you enter into the remote so it will work for that device. So if for your brand of TV there are 10 different codes you need to try them all to see which code works best for your TV, since some codes may work for some of the basic functions only and other codes might work for everything. Once you found the appropriate code you can then re-tune the TV. Some more advanced Universal Remotes have the codes stored in the remote itself and you need to follow the necessary instructions. You can a basic Universal remote in the 2 euro shop or more advanced ones, I have a great one I got in Aldi's for about 10 euro.
