Will buying a Megane Mark2 break my heart?

I've heard they have poor reliability, however the wife is very keen because of the boot size and that they are cheap.
They seem good looking and fairly well equipped.

Is there any owners of the Megane Saloon (2003 onwards) that can advise on the good, the bad & the ugly of owning one?

    Many thanks for your advise.

    It might.

A good one will be grand, but a wrong'un will break your heart.

Is it worth the risk for the sake of a few hundred quid for something proven to be more reliable?

Common problems are faulty electric front windows. The early models had warranty on the windows extended to 4 yrs due to a weak plastic clip but all models have suffered faulty motors.

On petrols the coil packs can fail leaving the engine running on 3 or 2 cylinders. Easy to replace a coil for anyone who can undo a 10mm nut ( btw some other brands also have coil pack problems afaik). I think some of the early 1.6 petrols have had problems with the dephaser pulley which controls the variable valve timing (rattling sound in engine, poor running).

Other than that I'm not aware of any major issues.

Yes, buy a Suzuki Baleno instead and you won't regret it.

Early models have the potential to break your heart and your wallet. Early models are hit and miss so you have a higher chance of buying a lemon than a good one. If you are buying one go for for the Phase II facelifted model from 2006.

    Phase I:
