Having a Passat's whale-like bulk dragged around by a 1.4 turbo petrol motor sounds like a bad plan to me.

    Hi,

What are peoples opinions on these 2 cars:

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Volkswagen/Passat/1.4tsi-B/201041199894924/advert?channel=CARS

I know tax is going to be more on the S model but apart from that would people have an opinion on either models?

    Thanks

if you are going to buy a Passat why aren't you going for the 1.9 turbo diesel it offers good mpg and plenty of torque when you need it .

Neither is very appealing. Agree that engine and car are mismatched,

Enter the cardigan brigade tell us that for normal driving.......its got 100bhp....its fine....nah you will have to rev the nuts off it all the time to get anywhere cancelling out the efficienty.

Why pay top dollar for a VW when a octavia is nearly the same. 20k could buy you a lot of car....

Opinion, look elsewhere at a smaller car with the same engine or the same car only with a bigger engine, they're awful.

Will be used mostly for city driving (Dublin) and trips down country every month or so.
Currently have 01 Ford Focus 1.4

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 563 ✭✭✭mayo_lad

the passat is in a different class to the focus the equivalent vw model to the focus would be the golf/jetta . the passat would compare to the mondeo and you wouldn't buy one of those with a 1.4 engine would you ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,817 ✭✭✭Stevie Dakota

Of the 2 I'd take the silver obviously. For the driving you describe the 1.4TSi is fine, not everyone wants or needs diesel (and we have 2). I drove the estate version which is heavier again and it felt brisk enough. A test drive will settle that for you.

And not everyone wants an Octavia! :D

Ugh, buy a reliable car, don't be kidded into thinking VW are a quality brand.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,535 ✭✭✭btkm8unsl0w5r4

Well there is no point in a prestige brand with an asmatic engine like that....dare I say it....520d get a nice one second hand.....?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,822 ✭✭✭✭EPM

The 1.4 TSi isn't as underpowered as you'd imagine. Had one for a few weeks and it was peppy enough.

Obviously the silver one has the better spec so it's a no brainer. They had a subtle upgrade though this year so if you can find one of those in Sportline spec like the silver one is it will have a multifunction steering wheel and nicer alloys.

How long before we start seeing "my Passat TSI blew a turbo" posts?

I'd say the 1.6 TDi is too weedy for a car that size, too, I'd want the 2.0 TDi.

An octavia's dirt compared to a passat - don't delude youself!

I had a 1.6 B6 highline passat and it was heartbreakingly slow. Also, get used to mucho road and engine bay noise, not to mention the creaking, rattling dash.

The B6 was almost a great car.

Wouldn't go that far. Passat is based on a stretched version of the PQ35 platform so they are pretty similar. Think you're deluding yourself to think it's that that much superior

Maybe, but if an E39 BMW 530d hadn't blown it's turbo by 100,000 miles then you were doing well, and that engine was hardly stressed.

I'm no VW fan but 122bhp from a 1.4 litre petrol engine is not bad. My uncle had a 1.4 Passat and while it will win no land speed record it is well able to shift the body around. Sounds suited to the OP's needs.

Silver one looks like a pre reg as it has 10 DL XXX number plate in one of the photos but only 50km on the clock. Black baseline model is terrible though especially the plastic wheel trim. Of the two I would go for the silver.

No you get me wrong I think there both crap, why not have crap and cheap instead of crap and expensive.

I wouldn't go as far as to say the passat is crap. In fact, when it wasn't moving it was easily the most impressive car in its segment.

Not the current model. The whole interior feels cheap compared to the previous Passat. Meanwhile Mondeos and Insignias are better than ever.

The highline actually looked quite smart. Although, there were a lot of hard plastics used in the dash.

The mondeo just looks cheap (and I hear it's not particularly refined).

The insignia, apart from the odd looks, I might consider.

In fairness a brand new Passat with a turbo petrol engine (albeit a small one) for under €20K is hardly excessively expensive.

I wonder how many of the critics of these choices have actually driven this particular model. I have not but I do have a Golf with the same engine and I like it alot. It's way better than the old 1.6 on every front, it accelerates smoothly and brisk enough for what it is. The economy is good and tax is reasonable. Not so long ago 2 litre petrol cars were struggling to reach this power level with way less efficiency.

Reliability has been good. 2 minor non-engine related problems in 2 1/2 years both fixed under warranty. AFAIK there has been no major problems with this particular engine unlike the higher powered versions.

TBH for the money and coming from a 1.4 Focus looks like a reasonable deal to me esp the silver one.

So I took the car for a drive tonight and I have to say, it is very nippy. Extremely quiet engine, I actually didnt know if it was on or not when i sat in first (It was)
122bhp is more than enough for us and coming from the focus, is a step up. There was no sluggishness from it at all, the opposite in fact.

Thanks for all the replies, both positive & negative

You mean like 15-20 years ago?

Checking up, I see the Mondeo 2.0 had 136 bhp in 1992, the Vectra had 130 in 88, aha! the Passat had a weedy base 2.0 with just 116 bhp in 88.

So some 2 litre cars launched 22 years ago couldn't hit 122 bhp.

A 1976 Ford Escort MkII RS2000 had 110bhp as standard with no turbo's, injection, computers etc.

Factory bolt on options - idf carbs, big valve head, exhaust etc. could easily increase this way in excess of 122bhp.

Some of these engines are still running reliably today.

Power to weight people.....1400 Kg car, small forced engine, long wheel base.....this is a A - B car not for anyone into their motors. There are much cheaper options that are very similarly dull, unless you want to pay for badge.....get a 4 door GTI

Yes and by 2007 they had managed to squeeze an extra 7 bhp out of it.

All I'm saying for a 1.4 its perfectly able to move a car the Passats size with way lower running costs. OK its never going to have the same power and torque of a 2 litre but its in the same ballpark and way better than similar sized cars with 1.6-1.8L petrol engines

There's nothin' worse than goin' on a trip down the country and gettins stuck behind a caravan or tractor or something and not having enough poke to overtake when you have the pocket needed.

That's why I'd leave the 1.4TSI Passat and get a 4 door GTI or one of these.

    525i

    520d

    Accord CTDI Type S

    IS220

    Saab 9-3.

    Passat 170bhp DSG.

    VRs TDI

    S40

    Legacy.

It actually has more torque than most n/a 2litre petrol engines of any year and your right its perfectly capable in the passat.

Wow - there is some tripe going on in this thread!

The 1.4Tsi is adequate for this car. It's actually a better drive than the 1.6Tdi.
From a long term perspective the 1.6Tdi is a better buy, but higher initial outlay - if you can find one. If there are any 2.0Tdi 110bhp Bluemotion around, they'd be the one to go for.

Unless someone specified the Sports seats and different wheels on an Irish spec vehicle, the Silver one is a UK import. Sportline Spec (only model to get cloth Sports Seats) was discontinued in 2009. All Irish MY2010 models have a MFSW and Armrest, so they should be in the Black one, which looks like an Irish car rather than an import.

If you aren't desperate, wait a couple of weeks as there are still a large amount on daily rental fleets which should start to come back after the Bank Holiday Weekend.

When I spend 20k on a car adequate is not a word I want to use to defend it.

And not many other motor enthusiasts, who post in the motors section of a website would. But out in the real world, where not everyone else is that bothered about bhp/ton, 0-60, 30mph-50mph times, that's all some people look for.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,535 ✭✭✭btkm8unsl0w5r4

Sure just get a silver one then and be done with it, who cares, and to think of the GTI you cloud get for that money.....sigh.....

Yes but people spend that kind of money and alot more on even more mediocre Skodas and they seem to be flavour of the year on every thread. This Passat discussed here seems to offer more for around the same or less money.

Totally agree that a GTI would be the way to go and would offer the most bang per buck but I suspect the OP is not that way inclined....

    +1

7 or 8 years ago a similar spec 1.4l 75BHP Skoda Octavia cost a bit under €20k. Makes the 2010 122BHP Passat look good value, surely?

The silver one looks like it has a kmph only speedo, it is possible that it was a MY09 Sportline not registered until this year. Anyway it is sold so maybe the OP bought it.
