any building engineers out there??

    ok simple question...council house, chimney is cracked very badly...how do i get the council to sort it out, they have been told..but saying it is ok to use...it is clearly not:( any documents stating the procedure when a crack is seen on a liner??

    No standard documents. You'll need a structural engineer's report - and even then the council wont pay for it - its likely you'll fork out yourself.

    What is your worry? It is council property. It is not going to fall down so if the council are happy to let it deteriorate further, I wouldnt be overly worried.
    Any report you get now is unlikely to be strongly enough worded to get the council to act so I would sit tight. If it gets to the stage that you have soot damage coming through onto the wall surface etc, you could then get a strongly worded professional report stating that it is not in a habitable condition.

    Put your concerns in writing and send them to the housing section of the LA. CC a copy to your solicitor. That way you have effectively started a log on the defect and made the landlord aware of it. Contacting the PRTB may also be an option.

    Because we are dealing with a defect in the chimney here I would not accept a flippent attitude from the council. It may be a case that there is presently no worries with the defect, but that isn't your call, and it shouldn't cost you to get a report done in what is effectively a rented house.
