Trade her in for a better looking/younger woman. What man doesn't want this option for his birthday. Alternatively, does she have a sister?

Bruges is tranquil, with lovely restaurants along the canals. I preferred it to Amsterdam, but a visit to both might be very nice (train is very quick). Neither of us took to the "cool" side of Amsterdam - the female prostitutes (all of whom seemed to be black) in shop fronts posing for business was especially depressing. But if you can make a point of avoiding that Amsterdam is very good.

The most romantic large city in Europe has to still be Vienna. We went there for Valentine's Day some years ago and, despite several of the major palaces being closed (they open in the summer) there was so much to do. We spent one day in a Flemish Renaissance art section of a single gallery, the Kunsthistorishes Museum. It would have taken a week to see the entire museum. But in that day we saw many of the most famous Flemish paintings in the world (Rubens; Pieter Bruegel the Elder; etc) . If you're into cultural things like this Vienna would be a superb choice. You could go to listen to the world-famous Vienna Boys' Choir as well. You could also hop on a train and visit Salzburg, the home of Mozart, for a day also (you won't need more than a day there).

The most romantic small city we've ever been to is still Strasbourg. It's not even rated by most Irish people as anything but a political centre. We still don't have a direct airlink to it. But it is an absolutely gorgeous, gorgeous city full of charm and with, to my surprise, a strong Irish monastic connection (got that from the guided boat tour of the canal). Try and forget about the modern EU side to it; that is outside the actual city. Look at these images.

Commit Hari-Kari on the living room floor after watching a Logans Run boxset. It's all over.

Prague - Amazing things to see during the day, good night-life, basically the best value for money seeing as it's really cheap compared to dublin.
