Let me start by saying my knowledge of cars is minimal!

My '00 Leon failed the NCT last week on emissions. Gave it to my local mechanic yesterday and he reckons it's the cat converter and that i'd have to get the current one replaced. Apparently a new one could cost up to 500 quid + so i'm not at all looking to go down that route for an old car. Does anyone know where i could get a reliable one 2nd hand? Any other advice is also appreciated

Go to the scrap yard, get one and put in on and on the way to the NCT retest drive the bollox out of it. just make sure the mechanic does emissions test on it before hand to make sure its OK, if not bring it back to the scrap yard and try again.

    Try here: www.souhan.ie

They do replica cats for half of OEM costs.

Your local Motor Factor can get you one for something in the order of €100 - €150. Takes about half an hour to fit.
