I'm trying to put together a compilation for a birthday including one song from each year from 1970 to 2010. There are a lot of years with dozens of great songs and others with a lot of crap and what I've got so far is not really hanging well together. Can anyone help with suggestions for songs from any genre for any of the years which are reasonably well known but not played to death? I left my mp3 player at home so I don't even have the 20 songs I started with on me, but I'll bring it in tomorrow...

That's a deadly idea!! What years are you missing/have doubts about? That might be a better starting point :)

Well, I started off just picking the number one singles from each birthday, but there is some woeful stuff in there! Then I expanded it to songs off the top albums from that date and I need to fill in the blanks for the following years at least (although I'd choose a better song from a different date in a given year over a bad number one).
Good variety of great/good/cringy '80s stuff.
It's actually a really good cross-selection of "Oh I loved this one/Jesus how did I listen to that" :D

Updating the current list now, will post it up with blanks in a bit.
