Not sure exactly, i left it in for a health check. they found a fault with something else and sent it off for repair. the guy in the store told me that my stuff would have been shredded and it could not be retreived. is this true or is there a way i could get my photos back?

If they didnt tell you before hand that the data would be lost i reckon you should take it back in to them and ask them to pay for a data recovery specialist. Dont go copying or saving any new files to the hard drive in the meantime though.

Seems odd that they wouldnt clone the drive before carrying out any work on it. Maybe if you hang on until morning somebody here might have been in this situation before and could advise?

You could post in the Currys/PC World forum (http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=1333). Declan might be able to help you out. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but if the hard drive was destroyed or damaged then you might not be able to get the data back. Even if it wasn't you might still not get any or much data back.

I hate threads like this, makes me realise how crap I am at backing up.

Excellent suggestion - Declan seems to act directly on anything brought to him here, after reading through a few of the threads over the last few weeks i would be more likely to buy from currys than i was before (if i was still in ireland).

Yeah, these kind of threads normally remind me to back up anything important - but a couple of weeks on that goes out the window again.

Ha ha. Same here. I wouldn't mind but I nearly lost a college project a few years back. It took me ages to get it back and even then it was messed up and I had to fix a load of code in it just to get back to where I was.
