    Hi All

Need some impartial advice from people working in the trade please.

I had arranged to trade in my 06 520d touring with 125,000km in fairly basic spec against the new 520d touring which was supposed to be delivered 4 weeks ago.

Ive been offered 18k for it against the new one which i was pleased enough with but the dealer called me today to say the new car has arrived, i told him at this stage i would prefer to wait till jan to take it as its now too late. He informs me that my own car will be worth less come jan.

This was arranged without any paper work being filled out or deposits being paid, i will take the car but what im asking is what do you guys think i should do?

This is not the first new car i have purchased from this dealer and we have always had a good relationship, he says BMW let him dow and he is sorry.

    Any advice would be appreciated

...he's right about your car being worth less in a few month's......

...and, maybe this side of the budget is exactly the right time to buy: lord only knows what they'll do to VRT on 'green' cars come December, so that's another gamble. If it's in your driveway already, it can't be touched.

Me? I'd haggle with the dealer for some vouchers, an accessory or a discount off one (towbar, bikerack, mats, mudflaps, maybe something from the boutique...), or some other ditty, and just enjoy the car. If you really feel you're being hard done by, just keep it a bit longer, this time, and you'll have recouped whatever it is you think you lost......

...and if the Budget is ****e, then at least you'll have one over the rest of us, and will have had a little 'retail therapy' to enjoy.........

I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Its hardly worth waiting until January over the sake of 4 weeks, i'd do what galwaytt says and push for some goodies from the dealer.

Your car was always going to be delivered in the last third of the year, it makes no difference in my eyes that it happens to be October instead of September.

Last time this happened to a friend of mine I advised him to give his current car to the dealer now and borrow(til Jan) a Junker from same dealer and register new car in Jan,
To make this viable for the dealer, give a substantial deposit on new car or pay in full excluding VRT and leave it in the showroom for his display as payment for the loan of the junker.

Worked very well a few years ago .... only prob now is will the dealer STILL be in business January 2011 and will you receive car then.

Not a bad idea, actually: but to avoid any potential VRT issue, then give him yours, pay for the car, but stipulate and get an 11 reg issued before budget day. Win-Win ?

Work it out for yourself - which of the two cars will depreciate more on Jan 1st 2011 - a 2006 model or a 2010 model?

What the guy is telling you doesn't stand up to scrutiny, the older car will depreciate by far less on Jan 1st, it will go from being a four year old to a five year old but the new car if registered now would go from being a brand new model to a one year old model. There's really no doubt that unless he throws some major goodies or financial carrot your way I would not take the car until January.

The trade-in price you were offered would have been based on the market value that your old car would have been worth this year. In January it will be worth less as it will be a year older so you cannot expect the same allowance.

As suggested, a good option might be to trade your old car now, buy a cheap runaround until January. Either that or talk to the dealer and see if he has something sitting on his forecourt that ain't shifting for love nor money that he can lend you until January.

OP just wondering when you ordered the car? I'm guessing if it was supposed to be delivered 4 weeks ago you ordered around May/June. In fairness to the dealer (and I have no love for them!) your trade-in will be worth a bit less if he does not get to put it on his forecourt until next Jan as opposed to this Sept. I would probably wait until Jan at this stage though but the dealer may have a case in offering you less for your trade-in esp as you have not signed any contract.

VRT is charged on the day of registration, it can't be pre-paid.

An 11 reg can only be issued from 1st January 2011, so if there are VRT changes then a car held over to January would be affected and the dealer can't do anything about it.

OP - when was the car ordered? One of my orders made it to the dealer yesterday. That was ordered the 30th August and is bang on schedule - wasn't expecting it any sooner as it's 2 weeks after the scheduled production week.

I'm guessing a "hopeful" delivery date was given by the dealer, which is pretty bad form IMHO, no point in lying about delivery dates as it only causes problems down the line.

Ordered car in August after the pricing and specs etc were announced, he was expecting it in with his demo model for launch day, says mine was delayed over a headcloth issue. Its now in his showroom.

The junker idea isnt a bad one and the stick im going to batter him with for a few goodies isnt bad either, suppose i will call him and see where it goes, will update later.

On a side note the tax is now out on mine and it needs a service. As i mentioned in my op hes been pretty good with all the other cars i have ordered off him over the years.

Had the car arrived on time in the first place, the OP would still ahve this problem. 4 weeks doesnt make any difference at this point in time. I'd still be going ahead with it, probably because I wouldnt be able to wait until January to get it!

The dealer probably won't want to hold the car until January either because he'll have stocking charges to deal with.
