It's losing coolant and the windows are fogging up when i use the heater. I know it's coolant that's coming through the heater because i can smell it.
From searching the net it seems to be a common problem, can i disconnect the heater from the cooling system? I don't mind not having heaters as long as im not breathing in anti freeze.

Heater matrix gone possibly? look at the 2 water pipes going into the dash from the engine, just loop them around.

There was a recall on this about 10 years ago. The recall designation was 80A5. Call your local dealer and see if your car is still subject to the recall.

Works, and I've done it, but winter time gets old very rapidly. Seeing out the windscreen needs to be a low priority. Having a car with this mod is nearly as exciting as having one with an electric window stuck half way:)

As in disconnect the two pipes from where they go in the dash and join the two ends together?

I've read that also on a vw forum, as far as i can make out mine hasn't had it done. What do you think my chances are of having if fixed for free? it's a 97 car.

yeah, use a short stub of metal pipe, push the two pipes onto the stub and tighten with jubilee clips, jobs done. Means no windscreen demister tho.

They say we're in for a very cold one, maybe i could get one of those heaters to plug in the cig socket. I'm gone dizzy from the anti freeze:D

I'd say you have a good chance. In 2000 I was doing recalls on 1984 Golfs & Jettas. It's a safety recall so it is probably still outstanding for your car.

Stick a heater matrix from a mk3 golf into it, it's a better unit. You can get them from GSF.

I think it's a dash out job and something i don't think i'd be able to tackle myself. The car is only worth small money so looking for the cheap option.

Damn my speed reading - I just saw this now. If it's 97 then it's a MkIII and not subject to the recall.

    Your thread title says MkII.

    Fish. Kettle. Different.

If it's a '97 it could easily be a MkIV too.

Sorry my mistake, i don't have it long. I just assumed it was a mk2 because it's a non turbo diesel. I take it i can still disconnect the two pipes and join them together on the mk3? and will it still blow cold air if i do this?
    Thanks

Ive had to do this on Hiaces, and really, its a summer only mod. You will not be able to stick it in the winter, just from a seeing out point of view. Try the nova-stop as a get you through the winter fix, seriously, you do not want to drive a car with no de-mister, dying is a distinct possibility.

Does anyone know where i can buy Novastop in limerick city. Every motor factors i call either haven't heard of it or don't have it in stock.
    Thanks.
